Saas Fee in Switzerland is a high altitude resort that opens pretty early, i know its been open for a few weeks already this year. A couple of friends of mine have been there in the last couple of weeks and they said conditions were ok ... but whether its open as early as end Oct, i dont know. Maybe try calling the tourist info office?

there are two on the A40, the one you mentioned which is catching cars direction chamonix and the other is direction Geneva under the bridge just after the first exit for Servoz, about 5kms from Chamonix. I found this second camera the hard way, if you know what i mean!

and loads of snow here in Chamonix! about 15cm out side the chalet (we're at 1000m), so must be shed loads up the hill. Have a nice photo of the snow on the balcony, but cant figure out how to attach photos to these posts! Sorry!

Hi Simon
I think we have the answer to your dilemma. We specialise in independent family ski and activity holidays in Les Houches. We have 2 children ourselves and love to travel so we know how much hassel it can be and how much hassle it neednt be. We organise ski lessons, ski passes, babysitters, nursery places. We provide cots, high-chairs, sledges, baby alarms etc. Check out our website www.chaletinthemountains.com or call Helen on 0033 619124584. We still have a 6 person chalet free for half-term if you're quick. It is not featured on the sight but is in the same location. The garden is excellent for sledging and snowman building. The best news is we are also very reasonably priced and don t charge extra for any of the kid stuff!! We like to encourage families to travel.

Chamonix Valley is not bad. There are 5 main ski areas, each one has its own individuality and its own attractions and all are within 20 minutes drive from each other The valley floor is only about 950m-1300m above sea level, which is not so high, but you generally have to take a cable car up to the ski areas. For the most part, the skiing areas are generally in the 1700m+ range, so normally its ok for xmas. We have quite a bit of info about the ski areas on our site. Feel free to check it out! http://www.chaletinthemountains.com/ski%20areas.htm

And its the same over in Chamonix ... lost of fresh snow has fallen over and since the weekend. Its stopped now and the weather reports are showing 90%-100% sunshine for Thurs and Friday. Looks like its going to be classic conditions!!

And I also have a friend staying in Crans Montana, he's been frustrated for much of the week because lifts have been closed due to too much snow wind and general nastiness!! But he's happlily skiing today, he says the snow is great but its damn cold!!
Just had to share this, some incredible photos of an ice storm which swept the shores of the Lake of Geneva on Wednesday .... temperatures were well below zero and the wind was howling down the lake ... the result was so amazing we just had to add it to our site.
