That?s easy. Your average ski pro will always
- have a sun tan and just the right amount of stubble on his chin - Nod in recognition to the lift attendant ? even if he/she has no idea who they are ? sad thing is, the lift attendant will always nod back - possess the ability to ascend the 0.1% gradient up to the lift entrance without needing to place his/her skis in a V shape at 45degrees - Not be shouting ?Henrietta, Charlotte, Tarquin, follow PaPaaaaa!? at 97Db to his offspring - be a bit smelly Did i get it right? Marks out of 5 please! |

I always reccommend La Flégère!! In recent years the pisted area has been expanded quite alot, so if you go right to the top, there are some pretty challenging reds and blacks to get you back down. In my opinion its as good as the Grands Montets, which is more famous but usually more busy too.
Flégère has good altitude which means good snow quality, its south facing so has nice conditions in the mid winter months and, being directly opposite the mer de glace and mont blanc, has absolutely spectacular views. But if you are in Cham for at least 3 days then buy yourself a "Chamonix - Le Pass". With this ski pass you can try out all the different ski aeras. Have fun!! ================ CHALET IN THE MOUNTAINS Rental of self catered chalets in the Chamonix Valley, French Alps available winter & summer www.chaletinthemountains.com |
Middle aged men rule ..! did you ever seen Manchild series on BBC a couple of yrs ago?? But talking of middle, mid Feb is also mid half term. Between the brit, french and swiss half terms (or "Sports Weeks", oooh err, as they are known in Switzerland) flexibility on check in/check out dates are pretty minimal.
From what I've seen, March is the best time to get flexibility AND the slopes are les crowded AND the snu is out more often. Well at least thats the case in our neck of the woods! What ever you decide, have a good one! |
In Chamonix the officual dates are 8May for Les Grands Montets and 23April for the others. But thats the usual closing dates. No decision as yet on whether they going to extend! Its snowing on the pistes at the moment, so we can only hope!!!!!

it can happen like that. the lifts stay open later if the conditions are right, although usually on a restricted basis (in the same way they open sooner at the beginning of the season). but its too soon to tell yet, i wouldnt expect them to make that sort of decision till closer to easter.

Not sure if its cool to answer your own posts, but .....
Was up at Flegere in Chamonix Valley. The ski area starts at about 1900m and goes up to about 2500m. At 1900m there is a big pole stuck in the ground with the metres marked off on it. It was showing a snow depth of 3.5m!! To have 3.5m of snow in mid March, means that its going to be a long season. Add to that the excellent snow we had at xmas and NY, and I think its fair to say, Yes! This is going to be a Vintage Season!! Anyone thinking of a last minute excursion to the slopes, then do it! Today we have clear blue skies, lost of snow and pistes in great condition!!! |
I'm a border, have been for 10 yrs since i started with winter sports, I'm now 38 so cant really include myself amongst the young cool dudes. For the last couple of seasons I started skiing, so can at least see both points of view. After skiing/bording with mixed groups I agree with most of the other comments that there is little difference and it really is one of the same thing.
I think the reason borders got a bad reputation is because bording is easier (or at least not as technical) than skiing. So its easier for a border with less experience to go more crazy than it is for a skier ... hence you generally come accross more borders "who think they can , but cant " than you do skiers. And to prove (?) the point, there is the old joke frequently told by ski instructors Q: whats the difference between a beginner border and an instructor border? A: about a week!! |
