Consider this about Whistler;
Often wet wet rain /snow days. Often fog/clouds rain" Just remember what happened in the Olympics! I once guided a group there and for one week it rained rained and rained! Look up Chinook ! Do not believe me,,but do check weather charts over a 10 year period! better to ski in the interior in such ski resorts as; Kicking Horse, Panorama, Fernie ( for the hard core powder skiers! |
Marc,
Great choice this resort. Few tourists, varied terrain and great great powder skiing if you know how to find it! There are many many condos near by and all have kitchens. January is perhaps iffy as far as temperature. If you can get a stop over in Calgary,,visit ski shops to get better heavy polar fleece underwear! You must however go and eat once at base lodge bar/resto. There is where you will meet the locals who will (if they deem you "acceptable" ) show you the powder areas! Tradition is that you must buy at least one beer ,,,, Practice your,,,"hey" ( at the end of every sentence or phrase) such as,, "great conditions hey ",,,skiing fast hey",,,,to a girl,,"are you free hey" ! Hope this helps! Pavel |
I have a mono ski and use it only on powder conditions.
What a feeling! If anyone wants it please contact me via PM at this site! Pavel |
Dave Mac,
Loved your comments since it made me remember some great great skiing moments from last winter! A great women skier who had breast cancer,,with all the after effects came back to ski at our local resort. All the men at this resort paid her a one week ski holiday at a major USA ski resort and two men were selected to be her guides. On the first day she was weak and had some near falls. Then on the second day she began to explore "other ways " to ski! She was a top level skier of the old school thus tended to keep skis together ( more elegant to her). On the third day..the other male guide and myself planned to ski just a little faster, just a little more aggressive with skis just a little more apart! She took the challenge. By 2 Pm she was really really "carving" fast fast turns and loving it. Like you Dave Mac she explored new ways to ski and discovered stability, power and enjoyment! I saw men stop and just look at this women making great turns in the Spring sun! They had new idea that just a few months ago she was full of sores, with no hair and a PICC line directly into her heart since her blood vessels were damaged from all the chemicals! She was just like you,,discovery a new stance, a new way to play with skis all with fun and no stress! That is the beauty of skiing,,,always learning new better ways to enjoy the slopes! Thanks for making me think of that week! Pavel |
I regret using the term "expert" in this post now since many skiers feel this is the goal of skiing. The objective is to become "effective" while skiing. This means knowing how to use skis effectively, using the least amount of physical force, and enjoying skiing.
Now,,with so many changes in skiing,,,,,everyone seems to be an "expert", so please forgive this term within this post. Know what an expert is ? A person who has done all the mistakes and now is "advising" others how to avoid them! Rather now I use the term, "effective" skier since I have noticed that there is not one way to learn, not one way to ski, and not one way to enjoy skiing! The effective skier; -uses his skis to its technical limits. In short he/she plays with ski like a musician plays the violin! -uses a répetoire of skills and techniques depending on conditions -knows the limits of his physical abilities -knows the varied types of snows and slope conditions Finally an effective skier enjoys skiing for its "essence" not for its image. Those 5 points still are valid,,,,just change expert to "effective" and happy skier. |
Imagine it is August and I am preparing for ski season 2012.
I am sure you are wondering " why so early" ? Let me first brief you on all the "discoveries" I have made relating to ski tuning. First I had the chance to meet the technical people from Swix and they had many irons left from the Olympics at Vancouver! Used so they could not sell them. I happen to be given a course at a local college on ski tuning so they donated all of them! I was always against those $500 usa electronic digital irons since it seemed to me a "marketing" ploy! My 20 year old regular iron was fine! Well after testing the Swix electronic iron for a whole season I now know the difference. I do not recommend this iron to the weekend skier, but if you are a serious skier ( +100days of skiing), a level B racer or even a university racer you must get this iron! Solid construction, wide wide heating plate that takes seconds to heat up! Micro level temperature adjustment! No more wax smoke! No more melted ski bases! I had about 50 of the lower quality models that have a temperature dial related to the types of waxes Swix makes! Not as "sensitive" as top level iron. Plate not as thick and dial tends to "burn out" but at $50 usa a great iron for first year tuner! My most rewarding find in tuning had nothing to do with tools, iron or waxes but related to the new ski plates many ski companies are using. 10 years ago most plates ( except for VIST) were passive plate systems. A layer of rubber, plastic and alu. Now they are engineering marvels! I took apart the Fischer World Cup Floflex plates since I wanted to take it off a broken Downhill 220 cm ski and place it on another ski! Imagine this; two alu pivoting tuned cams at front and rear of plate, allowing ski to flex yet plate remain rigid three internal springs allowing flex adjustments ( thus allowing personal ski flex ) tuning One major 4 screw anchor section that allows the alu piece slide into it! Thus the alu plate (which retains bindings) is anchored only at center of ski. This results in a clean flex of ski yet no vibration ( or chatter) is felt! For you very very competitive skiers take this plate ( which is found on GS or downhill skis) and install it on some SL ski and you have a hot hot ski! Extremely sensitive to edge sets,,yet no vibrations at any speed! Most SL skis at the top end of their performance scale,,tend to chatter,,,to vibrate! Not with this plate system! The 2010-2011 Fischer World Cup skis had one small problem. those holes and tails tended to cause de-lamination if you were a strong skier! I had to fix several unit. If you have such skis check every day after skiing the tails ( near both edges) if a space developes. My advice to you is detuned tails 5-8 mm. from tail those allowing ski edges to release! The tip has a weak area just below the hole section and the ski edges! If you see a tiny crack,,go ski shop where you bought skis! Fischer will honor their product quality! If you have an older "holed" model the solution is simple ( Fischer has discovered this since all newer models have this solution). I have 5 pairs of the SL type skis and I have installed a thin metal plate on the base side of the ski! Two pop rivets does the trick! If you look careful all 2012 holed skis now have a yellow plastic sheath! More to come. Pavel |
The answer is clear!
As often as possible! I do mine everyday,,since I ski everyday! Why? It protects the ski bases It makes my skiing so much better I love to let skis do all the work. I am old! Pavel |
Can the atomic Neox TL binding be set into "forward" position as the old Neox?

Many more shoes!!!! ( great name),
When you play with the placement of the binding, please understand what you are doing. With the advent of the new shorter skis a "minor" adjustment has major impact! By all means find your sweet spot,,,but remember, "less is best" , so slowly make changes! Happy skiing. Pavel |
