Bandit,
You are "modest" !

You are not just a punter ! I have followed your " ski adventures" and your house adventures in the background! No you are a very good skier!

May I suggest the following site which explains to me what the "rocker" ski is to me, http://www.evo.com/rocker-guide-what-is-rocker-and-why-does-it-matter.aspx

You will note on the illustration that both the tip and tails are raised,,unlike a traditional shaped ski!
The surface touching the flat surface is reduced!

Yes now the rockers are promoted for all sorts of terrain ( that is where the major discussion will happen this season)! Its birth was for powder skiing in + 50 cm. of snow ,,thus you could get an early float !

My point was not to get into the pros and cons of such a ski! That is up to each skier to try them and decide. My point was to comment on why I never hire ski !

Punter,,you are not Bandit!

Smart women you are!

But can we agree,,,to have different opinions ,,different points of views ?

Sorry, but I will not hire ( rent ) skis,,ever !

Have a nice skiing season.

Respectfully,
Pavel

Sorry Bandit, I should have been more precise.

I was referring to to "ordinary" shaped skis in the 2010 circa!
Of course rockers are available,,but these have designed tips and tails that are curved upward at both ends and are for persons who know how to ski in soft powder conditions!

There is now a "discussion" among skiers in my area about the impact of rockers on hard well groomed slopes! Some say there will be a increase of accidents since again the effective ski edge available to skier is smaller! Time will tell!

If you look at rentals ( or skis for hire) then ,,by February tips begin to curve upward at 10-20 cm from tips,,due to "heavy use" and skiers that often are too heavy for type of ski!

That was my point!

ATOO,
Ha,,,the key word was Biathlon !

I apologize in that context,,,the seconds count and the wax is key!

Wrong wax and you are in the low group!

That powder form is called Fluo wax and is more expensive than cocaine in my area!

Be very careful using this powder form since the fumes do cause "secondary effects" in the brain !

In the past Olympics ski tuners used shipping containers as "mobile ski tuning waxing rooms! Several technicians began to show "strange behaviors", perceptual problems and breathing problems! Now all technicians must wear masks and there must be some form of ventilation since at a given temperature range this powder instantly becomes a gas !

You did not bore me with the details, since few skiers even bother to wax skis!

We did a study with a junior ski team ( ages 11-14 ) to see what made the difference in the first 10 best skiers ! Was it the ski design, the ski wax or the ski technique ! The very first parameter that determines placement is ski technique above all others! Ski tuning was second. The waxing at the junior level does not seem to help ! That is for the top 10 skiers!

Great for the mind!

Good Luck to the young lady!

Cameras and Skiing!!

I have "lost" two cameras due to;
temperature difference from chalet to outside -10! The rear screen "froze" ! Seems the plasma or medium for the rear screen can not take rapid temperature changes. Camera works fine,,,,but I can not use rear screen! I can barely see forms when I use camera inside!

The second camera a Sony has a lens which retracts within box. It froze while taking picture in -15 weather! Gears just froze with lens half in ,,half out! !
Now I have a Olympus Stylus TOUGH which takes pictures in 10 meters of water. Will never freeze since it has special gel lubricant and never fog up!!!! ( so far)!

It costs a little more,,but part of my job is taking pictures of skier clients in powder!

I also have a video camera ( semi-professional) on tripod. I have used it for 5 years with no problems in rain, snow sleet etc,,,, Great unit!

Humidity seems to be problem with many electronic cameras so now I have a zip lock plastic bag while skiing!

ATOO,
You do not apply wax just to shave off seconds. 99% of skiers do not race and what is the point of going straight down a course! The fun is in making the run last a long long time!

You apply wax to protect base.

You apply wax to get a better glide so that you are "floating" on bubbles of wax molecules.

You apply wax so that you barely do anything to set an edges.

As far as cost,,,,I get mine "wholesale" in kilo bars under 7 euros for 2 kilos! Of course if you buy in a ski shop resort,,,,,,

tropicana,

You are correct,,one picture frozen in time does not do you justice!

Post a video of you skiing this winter!

That will reveal a great deal!

OldAndy has missed the point.

Yes of course renting (hiring) skis and rust do not come together often!

OldAndy,
I never hire skis because;
never have top of the line skis for hire
never tuned correctly for me
I never wait in line for hire
I am on the hill before ski shop opens
my skis are never rusty !!!

90% of skis you "hire" are low end, not well tuned, few are bevelled or have a structure base! All have all round ,,all temperature wax which is applied via rollers.Never by irons!

Bindings on "hired" skis have DIN scale too low for my type of skiing!

Finally if you look carefully at most "hired" skis ( by putting them base to base),,you will note that the tips will tend curve apart very much like the modern "rocker" skis! Guess what this does to your skiing?
Why ?

Because many shops give out shorter skis to beginner/intermediate skiers. I often see men who are 6' 2" heavy set ( several several stone or in US 250 lbs) on 160 cm skis! Guess what happens to these skis over time! They bend at tips!

No,,the few seconds in using my rag on the edges is worth the pleasure of having tuned skis!

Finally, Andy,,,,I love to caress my skis to thank them for the pleasure they have given me all day! It is not a chore for me!

But then Andy,,that is just my choice !

Happy skiing!

There is a little known ski resort in Juneau, Alaska which has a great "older" lady ski instructor in the 70's who is a legend there!

She also smokes salmon in her smoke house ( in her backyard),,so we do an "exchange" ! I get her skis at cost price and she sends several kilos of the very best smoked salmon you have ever tasted.

This season 10 "older" men are going to give her a surprise ski party when she gets the "life time" ski pass of Alaska!

That will be my first trip.

Then I hope to go to a little village in Austria where another cyber friend has an inn and now a "micro-brewery" ! Perhaps I will meet Dave Mac since he is well known in this valley ! My friend who has a travel agency wants more skiers to go to this valley!

Finally, two trips to Utah,,,with a group of men who want to learn to ski in, +60cm. powder with new "floaters ( those +110 mm skis) !

Soon snow!!!!
