Great post SwingBeep. I would also venture an even less quantifiable reason, that our expectations are very different. The skill development in most adventure sports is increasing exponentially. Many ordinary kids can do tricks in the park that would have been unthinkable for professionals twenty years ago. Our general exposure to media has allow us all to realise we are capable of things our parents would not have dreamed possible by ordinary people. Though in some ways equipment has enabled us to take greater risk, it is not the impetus.

I have not seen many people on the slopes with one,

Well looks like you will this season.
and God forbid that anyone should have "high spirits" while on the slopes
Looks like it's going to be a weird season. Hundreds of people taking erratic lines down the mountain, all the time smiling at a little box on the end of a ski pole held out to one side

For skiers in the US, there are three regions; the West Coast the Rockies, and the Ice Coast.

I've been twice so far  Seriously though, we are finally cold enough to make enough snow to open most ski areas fully around here. Last year we had been skiing three/four weeks already, so it's not just Europe that has problems. I think the US east coast is behind schedule as well.
Ryan air is OK if you know what you are likely to get. The problem is that they don't provide the standard of service that an air traveler would normally expect, and therefore should have that caveat in all their offers. My wife flew once with them, paying full whack for the airfare, knowing nothing of their reputation. She could for the same price have flown with two other airlines, but the Ryan flight met her schedule best. What a shock for her, and then to find out that most people on the plane had paid a fraction of what she had.

A can of tool dip to repair my gloves.

Scuse my ignorance...how does this work?
have i been throwing away gloves for no reason??????

Tool dip is a liquid plastic that you would dip the handles of metal tools into. It dries leaving a plastic coating. You should be able to get small cans at a hardware store. It works well for repairing the fabric part of gloves that are wearing thin and protecting the stitching. It can be painted on to the material of ski pants and jackets where the material is wearing thin making a rubber patch (it comes in different colours). It works OK on leather, but tends to peel at the edges of a patch. For patching leather gloves you can also use shoe goop.

This glove was patched two seasons ago. The heel of the palm and the finger tips had worn right through.
