FBS wrote:Hello. Just registered but have been enjoying the site for a while. I'm quite new to skiing but considering buying some ski boots. I have three options in terms of local(ish) shops and I wonder if you have any experience of the boot fitting service in any of them. The shops are...

Team Ski in Dorchester
Snow and Rock in Bristol
Ellis Brgiham in Bristol

Any specific experiences would be very welcome.

Many thanks

Suggest that you visit a good bootfitter, as opposed to a ski shop which sells boots. There are some good fitters working in shops around the country, but they all seem to know each other (and each others' work).
Ellis B's used to have a talented fitter in Bristol, but he'd moved on last time I came to buy boots there.
I have seen the results of ski boot fitting at S&R Bristol,I can't recommend them, but who knows what next winter will bring with the next batch of Kiwi's doing a season in Europe
Comfortable boot for tibia injury

Steve T wrote:Getting back to slopes after a tibia break 3 years ago. Looking to buy some boots that will shift as much pressure as possible as high as possible. Break was slightly below mid point of tibia. Bone graft and titanium rod made leg stong again, but the higher the pressure point the better. In short, a tall comfortable boot for an intermediate skiier.

Also, has anyone heard of an ortho device possibly that can be added to boot to help with the pressure issue?

Thanks.

I know of only 1 bootfitter in the UK who is qualified to make the necessary boot modifications for you. (There may be others, it's just that I don't know them or their work) He can make medical grade ski boot and footwear modifications and work to orthopaedic consultants specifications.
He's a member of this forum too, as cem, though he might be away skiing this week :D

Here's his website address, suggest dropping him an email, outlining your needs.

Ever had one of those ski days, when you can't stop smiling?

Val d'Isere, Saturday, last afternoon of skiing, forecast was for cloud/snow all day, with many pistes closed and 5 out of 5 on the avalanche scale. Resolved to packing our stuff away and reading a book. Then the sun came out. Powder snow, on piste and off piste, bright sun-shine. Barely another soul around, not a lift queue in sight. Spent the afternoon giggling to myself. Happy days. :D :D :D

Can you just clarify that you went off piste when the avalanche warning was 5/5?

Perhaps there was a good reason for few folks on the hill?

The death toll in the Northern Alps was pretty high last weekend.Pistehors has the details.

Slightly off message here but it seemed the best thread to ask my question without starting a new topic!

We are off to Nendaz in March do we need to get Swiss Francs is the Euro widely accepted?

thanks

Shazzo

You will need Swiss Francs, Switzerland is not in the Euro, or the EU. You may find the occasional shop accepting Euros at a rate which will favour the shop not you.
Ross, don't go to Zinal, all the locals would giggle at your skinny little skis. You would not cope with the humiliation at your tender young age. It's all big mountain freeriders in full face helmets riding impossibly large twin tips, taking outrageously straight lines down cliff faces.

And ise )

I've not been to Ste Foy, when I used to ski France, always ended up in Villaroger on the other side!

The clouds came over and the light went poor, now the sky has cleared and the sun is out. Darn cold and breezy up top though.

Some patches of soft powder left, but some is starting to form slabs, and a light crust. Ross, I hope those fats of yours have a bit of weight in them )
I just quit for the day. I have a stomach upset and my legs have gone all rubbery, subsequently skiing very badly whilst shivering on the inside.

I blame it on a pain au chocolat mid morning

Still, I did some reasonable stuff this morning, and the avvy risk has gone down to "Considerable" so most of the hill is open :D

Very cold though
Do I need?.........

Also is there anything I can buy to temporarily put on to the hire skis that will differentiate mine from someone elses?

A cable lock is normally the best ID your skis can have :D
