burning thighs after about 30 to 40 mins of skiing
Started by Bignick in Ski Fitness, 133 Replies, discussing Niederau and St. Anton am Arlb...
Stefan brings up a good point.

Many skiers have no idea that the "inclination" of the foot bed can cause issues!

On many ski boots there are two way to deal with inclination.

The first is an adjustment behind the boot shell. It usually is a screw with two positions.

It can also be a "slider" system. Up = more incline down = less incline.

Often what happens is the boots are in a "aggressive, forward position " That is the skiers is positioned forward more,,but skier is not ready for this position and thus tends to lean back.
More pressure on thighs.

The second cause is situated at heel section INSIDE the boot liner. You can add a heel insert to raise hell. This is done often to skiers that have too much play near the arch.

Again this raising of the heel may cause issues. Any modification to boots must be done carefully with a knowledgeable person. One rule of thumb in any boot modification; "less is best" !

In conclusion,, you should never have "burning thighs" if you ski correctly,, effectively and have correctly fitted boots!

90% of time burning thighs = poor skiing technique because you are sitting back on ski tails !
10% is due to poor alignment of boots or equipment other issues

Dave Mac,

I have a skier friend, who works in the "security sector". He once told me that there are two very dangerous contexts in his work.
1. Domestic disputes when police are called. Often the wife will attack the police once she sees "her man" being handcuffed and placed in car !

2. Skiing accidents. He is a patroller in a major ski resort. In a serious ski accident TWO patrollers are always called since often there is a "discussion" resulting in physical attacks! That husband had so much "adrenaline" pumping into him that he had to channel it to,,,,,,you! Freud called this displaced aggression!

My friend was hit last year from behind and thrown violently sideways. The shock generated so much "adrenalin" that he got up right away and said he was fine. We told him to stay down and wait for patrollers. He refused and skied down, got into his car and fainted from pain !
He had;
-fractures ankle
-fractured rib
-fractured clavicle
-fracture thumb

I rarely even touch a "traumatized" skier since in my area "legal litigations" are the norm!
I will set up barriers.
I will call for help.
I will wait for patrollers,,but to touch,,,,,hummmmm !

Ice has taught me to keep away from fallen bodies ,,,,well unless it is near a bar and she is ,,,,,,!!!!!

Have a great skiing season.

What size hands do you have ?

Dave Mac,

Love that picture since it illustrates so well how to protect the fallen skier ! So many accidents happen due to secondary crash. That is other skiers hitting fallen skier or "spectators" !
Those double X skis are great. Who is that white jacket fellow watching patrollers! Husband !

Sometimes it is good to have a person above the X skis watching and waving off skiers wondering what those free skis are doing on slope! I know it seems evident but,,,,

I had a close "near death" experience not on ice but water ! All was clearly indicated but some people just do not get all the signals!!!

I was scuba diving in a lake and had the international flag for diving floating on a large inflated ballon! As I was coming up ,,I heard a whinnnnnnnnn coming at me with full speed. A boat !

I dove deeper knowing that I was close to surface.

The blades,,cut my fins off !

You can imagine the scene !

The reason given by the boat driver,,,,,he wanted to see what this flag was all about ! Thuuuuuuu !

Same in skiing. I have seen some skiers ski between the X skis! No room to stop !

Hope lady is fine !

Nice man!

As far as "neutral ski",,you are very correct! It does not cause drame,,problem is most skiers lean back out of fear,,,,,thus causing more grief on ice!

Skis also teach you how to put pressure fore and aft,,but most skiers do not listen to skis !

Yes on ice,, stay neutral,,stay soft,,,,trust your skis to pass you by the ice ! Most skiers do not trust themselves !

Great advice !

Bandit,
We are far off the never list, but let me answer your "hesitations" !

First I am not registered to this paying site.
I have nothing to do with this site,,except that I ski with some of the testers and we do discuss ski performances.
My point was this. If you want to get an "expert" opinion on what a ski can do and its performance range then rather than just read from all sorts of "experts" ( some good some,,,,,,) then try out this site!

In my opinion it is the very best site of non-biased ski information. Just read the text on ski binding placement !

Bandit, we all make choices in life. Is the "entry" fee worth the information. That is for each person to decide.

Dave, this site's guru makes the decision to have some ads on the side. What kind of ads and information he allows is his choice.

Skiers who want to be educated, informed about skiing have many sources. It is up to each person to decide which source is appropriate.

Now back to the Never Ever List !

A friend in the ski business ( a ski area manager ) mentioned some never ever items ski resorts have done!

1. Refused a blind man to bring his dog in hotel ! Clerk did not know he was blind!!!!!
2. Play Rap Music at 8 AM during a seniors gathering
3. Fire a ski patroller who took a skiers ticket for skiing off limits
4. Ski instructor allows a 5 years old to go off alone ( from class) to chalet to see mother!
5. New ski resort management, declines to recognize "life time" season passes given by former ski resort owner!

More to come!

Trencher,
Love that phrase,,"senior moment" ! If you do not mind I will use it often !

If you consider all the SL World Cup skis,,they are great!

All have fantastic plates now. All are truly snow leopards ready to pounce,,yet all have their own "personalities" ! That is the fun is trying out new skis!

I am happy to hear that you still try out the boards once in a while !

Bandit,

Not sure what Paywall has to do with skiing?

Since this is a skier's site, for skiers who want services and information on topic I suggested Realskier site for the skier who wants unbiased ski evaluation information.

I am not involved with them in any way, except that I do ski with Peter Kelty on ocassion.

Paywall ?

SwingBeeep,

You have truly made that "terrible behavior" the top of my list ( and in a cable car) ugh !!!!!.

Never happened to me and I hope it never happens!

I have seen the results of such poor behavior on the slopes! Luckily I was able to ski away "fast" !

Thanks for the information on normative and criterion evaluation.

If you have a chance visit the Realskier.com site for relevant evaluation results. One of the very few places that do not accept skis from companies and who will not allow ski companies to "help them" in their evaluation.

Ian,
The best "defensive move" on ice is still;

1. Spot it

2. Avoid it ( because of bodies all over the place)

3. Go where it is steeper (90% of beginners will not go there)

In the final analysis,,,,,,just put it into your drink and sip it !

There is one moment in the spring season when I look out for ice! It is in Spring since it gets "softer", so edges can bite into it. So while others are skiing in semi-snow/water,,,, I go by on ice !

Enjoy it !
