See our intro to Les Deux Alpes, but it's a very large ski area with pretty good connections and access.
Les Deux Alpes has a bunch of Green and Blue runs; many of which are high on the glacier so get good snow. I've not skiied there for years but had the impression it was pretty good for "improvers".... |

Sorry Kell, snowboard was sold last season - if you're on a budget, keep an eye on eBay and sales of hire gear from last season... can be surprisingly good deals!
Good luck, Dave |
Hi Chris,
I've been doing weekends for the last few seasons and try to get one in before Christmas. Pre-packaged weekends are not so common yet, so tend not to feature much in the best-value late deals. I reckon I get better value by booking everything myself, and you get total flexibility that way. As long as it's not the Xmas / New Year weeks you'll have no trouble finding accommodation at good prices (you can haggle too as most places will be no more than half full before the end of December). My advice (which I am following... (;^) ) would be to book some cheap flights (Geneva or Zurich usually cheapest at reasonable times - don't fly mid-day 'cos its a day wasted) NOW. Book a hire car nearer the time (watch for extra discounts pre-Xmas from Holiday Autos in particular) - split with a mate it'll probably be cheaper than a transfer by any other means, and then you can go where you like. Then just follow the snow... Last year's erratic early season snow meant I ended up driving through the night to Val d'Isere - but woke up to half a metre of powder and blue skies for 3 days. I've also done Geneva-Chamonix-Meribel for a long weekend (try doing that without a hire car! actually don't...). Just my experience, Dave |
Looking for "Reasonable accommodation in Chamonix area"
"Hi is there any one out there with access to information regarding apartement accomm. over the Xmas period for four adults." Asked by MickRick Re-posted to the forum by powderhound - can anyone help Mick out? |
Your options are not as limited as they once were, but you will need to do a bit of research I think.
I wouldn't recommend the Val d'Isere (Funival) runs for a complete beginner. The Funival does give access to a couple of runs marked as Greens but the grading is barmy - last time I was there, the steep (for a Green) top section of the first "Green" had moguls on it - and you have to get a chair back to near the top of the Funival (and then walk uphill some). Tigne's funicular takes you to the Grande Motte glacier; in good snow the Blues at the top would be ok for a learner and are served with drag lifts (nasty T-bar things, but they are attached to the ground!). You can take the funicular down again (or a Red - there might be a Blue descent too). Other places with funiculars include Cairngorm (think there's a Green and Blue down to the mid-station), Zermatt and Kaprun (don't know either of those resorts myself). Of course, the easy answer will be for you and your wife to become super-fit ski-tourer types; just strap the skins to you skis and you can walk up the piste to the top! No need to worry about lifts then... |
Not been there... but I am jealous! Does that help? ;) |
Convex slopes??? Nasty.
If you don't know where you're going, and you can't see where you're going - don't go there! |
