Bandit.
Excellent suggestion.

In the spirit of "collaboration",,,,,,,, allow persons who got correct answers on quiz share their answers. It will promote positive discussion on how they got answer, how they used Goggle effectively and also allow late entries to also search for correct answer.

Let me begin discussion for correct answers by giving one of the answers.

It is Chemmy Alcott.

What item does this answers refer to ?
Yes Bandit id right. If you ski a great deal in powder or do a lot of "off-piste " adventures s a context specific binding is the solution.

As far as not sinking,,seems that "feathery", soft powder in Utah does not hold skier like me up!

Still, regardless of equipment you have practice getting up and putting skis back on before heading in the "wilds" .

Have a great winter all.
Seems that many British skiers want to go to Whistler for a holiday.

If you want local information about the village" Whistler" and not marketing info from Inter-West try this site. http://www.piquenewsmagazine.com/

It is a local internet site I often use to get local rooms, local condos and local information on specials.

Last March there was an amazing snow storm with +40 cm. and since it was late season there were some amazing prices in condos, resto and even lifts !

It gives you the "flavor" of the local scene.

Hope you like this site.
Even "expert skiers" must learn new tricks or moves.
This procedure (which you should practice away from your friends) will save your ego in serious powder skiing.

We all fall at some time while skiing. Trust me falling in +40,,+50 cm. powder snow can cause serious issues if you have not practiced this move before.

How to find that ski and how to get back on it with powder snow up to chest level?

I will assume you have a powder leash, thus just look for it!

Get lost ski and now make a "platform" across ski slope by stamping down with other ski! Do this slowly and gradually. Do not do ONE big move!
You will sink deeper into snow.

If you have good friends have them also help you make a platform. 90% time you will not have friends while skiing powder! Learn to do this move alone.

Clean snow away from binding.

Here is the trick. Carefully and slowly step into bindings. Rather than stamp foot into unit,,do it in gradual fashion.

Practice falling and getting back up in powder in ever increasing amounts of snow!

If you are 40 years old or older,,,,,do not over exert yourself!

Oh,,,,enjoy flakes around you.
Please do not laugh after reading this one!

This is a survival item that most if not 99% of skier never do until "that moment" !

A procedure which all skiers should master ( well at least the ones who drive to ski center) is finding that extra car/house key.

I am a notorious "loser" of car keys, sun glasses, gloves, etc,,, thus I make extra car keys which I give to my skiing buddies. Two reasons for this.

1. If I lose my car key ( not ignition but valet key),,,I can still get home with my trusted friend who has my other key.

2.If we get lost in ski center he/she still can get into my car, store skis away and wait for me at bar.

Practice this since it will happen to you!

Far Queue,

I have a surprise for you. For participants like you there are some small ski related items which I get from ski/board companies.
Via PM send where I can send you these items.

For example last year one boot company had some multi-purpose knives (like the famous Swiss penknife ) to give out. I had 5 units given to me. Passed them on to other deserving skiers.

Hope what you get.

Everyone is a winner Far Queue.
No problem.

Not offended in any way.

When the time comes for shot ski I will be here.

To bad you are not "closer" I would give all participants such a ski. I have a friend who makes special ski chairs with old skis which he gets from ski shops. He has hundreds of skis.

I know a ski shop owner that has new ,, older skis ( the narrow ones) which he sells to me for $5. I am now making a ski bar top for a friend near a ski resort.
( if only I owned a ski bar,,,,,)

Have a nice ski season Felthrope.
100mm width underfoot skis

To answer you question in regards to "performance reduction" with more width, you must understand the function of wider skis ( some with a rocker).

Performance for a SL type ski means fast very fast tight turns with great stability.

Performance for "all round ski" ( in the 90 mm range) means ability to perform various techniques in various conditions. You can not compare in normative terms these two.

Performance for powder skis ( 110 mm. + ) means fast rising, soft tip, floating , cruising skis with practically no edge sets. Again you can not compare SL type ski to powder ski. That is like comparing oranges and apples.

You have to decide what you want in a ski. The comparison must be based on your needs, not relative to each ski's parameters.

That is why good skiers, have a "quiver",,that is the best performing skis for each desired skiing contexts.

It is up to you to consider how fanatic you are about skiing.

Most fanatic skiers have at least three skis;

1. SL type ski for hard, steep, fast turning slopes often called "front side skis !
165-170 cm range

2. GS or type ski for those long fast cruising runs 180 cm range

3. Powder ski for +40 cm. powder snow , + 110 mm width, 175 +cm range

Each ski provides maximum performance and excitement to skier IN THE TARGET SKIING CONTEXT.

Mind you this is for skiers who want to ski on the very performance edge of a ski! Not for every skier.

You decide.
