Preventing skis being stolen
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 11 Replies
Two contexts for safe skis.

The first if skiing alone is as suggested by many is buy a ski lock! Now if your skis are in the "fine ski range" ie World Cup type even a cable will not stop a determined thief!

If skiing with a group always place ski in sight of group and always have someone watch skis! The worst place to place skis is where everyone does! Keep you skis away from herd! Isolated, alone near fence, tree, lift etc,,,, Anyone coming near skis will stand out from crowd !

90% of ski theft is the "snatch and grab " technique! That is,,thief goes by skis to determine quality, type and length. On second pass ,,without stopping picks up skis and continues on way !

I have a personal method since I have several skis to evaluate in one day! I have a thin 2 meter metal high grade wire very much like a piano wire! On each end I have a lope for lock! This thin wire can go in ski brake area and thus three pairs of ski can be locked! Taped to wire is a "personal protection warning system" many women have in their purses! Pull wire,,,,a very loud wailing sound is produced"
Yes it has saved my skis many times and reaction from thief is "magical" !
Hope this helps you all.
Trencher et al,,,,,,

You are watching the "ski seduction" process !
Anyone have some advice......?

I so enjoy reading and "analyzing" responses from all the actors on various chat sites!
Ever wonder how your are perceived!

Some years from now, some of you lucky ones will get a "dossier" of how you are seen by total strangers! You can determine if the profile was on mark !

Tony H,
As always you are so on the mark with your, "ever heard of google" question ! I am still amazed,,, after several years of reading various chat sites how some person ask for "irrelevant" information sources!
By all means Tspill,,,try first google! Then the companies themselves! Then perhaps other more informed "academic" information sites !

That goes to all;
-what is the best ski,,best boot, best resort, best pole etc,,,
-who has the latest gadget, phone camera, GPS, hoody, sunglasses, etc,,,
-what best You Tube teaches how to breath, live, become expert, etc,,,
-how to dress for skiing
-what to say in ski bar
-etc,,,,

Now back to original issue,,,,seducing wife/husband to ski ! The key word is seducing !

Can we agree that skiing is not for everyone ! I know,,I know,,,,I hear the gasp all over the cyber world, I hear the groan,,,,from all you J2ski stars !
So first you must accept that for some skiing,,,is NOT a preferred activity !

If the partner is still "open" to trying it,,then the "honey approach" is much better than the vinegar one ! In short,,,never force anyone to ski ! ( You all know that forcing can be done in many ways) Do not do this !

To some just sitting in the sun near snow is skiing!

To some just sipping a drink at a bar in a ski resort is skiing.

To some just being in a outdoor spa watching skiers passing by is skiing !

Since this is a "public" site,,I will send via PM my "effective" seductive techniques which I have used over the years to introduce skiing to others!

All I ask is that you do not pass along these secret "seductive" techniques !

I will just pass along one, which I used on all my children with great success!
Every Sunday I would take my children to a local smallish ski hill ( really just a slope ) ! It had small T bar beside a sled run and a small resto !

The youngest would just sit, bundled up in a sled at the bottom watching ! Seeing all the fun! Watching all the children laughing ! ( laughing is infectuous you know ) !
After several trips,,,the youngest would say,,,"where are my skis"?

The seduction has begun !

Step one,,wait for person to want to ski ! All you have to do is "seduce" them with ; happiness, freedom, friendship, love, attention, sun, sharing, challenge,,,you name it !

Once they have taken that first bite,,,,,,,,the rest is easy ! ( Please allow me this suggestion Dave,,,before all the others get into other matters )

That is WANT,,,is the key !

Hope this helps you !

Oh,,,,coming up is a Pavel story about how I "seduced" a 200 lb. women who was afraid of speed, afraid of flying, afraid of cold, afraid to get hurt, afraid of pain etc,,,,to ski with me !

It did happen !

Respectfully,
Pavel
So whats our goodbye strapline?

Simple!

It is embroidered on my ski jacket;

Live to ski,,,,ski to live " ( a long long time ) !!!

Pavel
I am sure there are many of you in England !

Come out of your "shell" and read this;
http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/02/02/skiing-with-a-couple-of-70-year-old-teenagers/

Then go skiing!

Respectfully to all "older" non-teenagers,
Pavel
Dobby,

I have the same problem but in reverse!

My son will not let ski ALONE with his girl because I will "influence" her to ski faster ! I plan to take my grand-daughter out of school for a special ski day ! I ski close to a ski center where there was an olympic downhill event ! I want her to "experience" going down a true olympic ski course! SLOWLY !

At one point Dobby, you must allow the bird out of nest ! Sooner is better than later even if it is too traumatic for parents!

Perhaps we can "switch" skiing partners someday ?

re comment s about that word,,,,,,,S,,,,,,,,,,, !

There is no doubt that snow,,,,,, has its place in the skiing skills repetoire ! Yes in specific contexts,,,but the sooner you get out of that context the better!

Please note **** Not very safe to look UP while skiing down ! Perhaps looking up while traversing slope,,,,, but looking up while skiing down,,,,,trees, rocks, crevasses come up very fast !!!!

Many of you have brought up the issue of skiing IN TRAFFIC !!!! My attitude is very much like driving a car in a snow storm !

You have two options;
1. follow herd/flock/pd etc,,, like many car drivers do
2. get out of herd context by slowing down, passing or changing slope

My experience has been that following herd results in increasing chances of "accidents" !
Being IN herd definitely will cause accidents - in my case.

As long as s,,,,,,,,, is NOT a panic technique,,by all means use it!

Innsbrucker,
Take a few seconds off and watch persons who s,,,,,,,,,, ! Focus on their upper torso! What do you see 99% of skiers doing ?

They are not doing the s,,,,,,correctly! That is putting gradual pressure on opposite ski tip so the SKI will turn!
So if you want to go RIGHT,,,,you gradually put pressure on left ski tip !

What do 99% of person do?

The skis are in a V or pie formation and go down the fall line,,,,,the shoulders/hands/arms rotate to right and the body goes into a torture, twisting posture FORCING knees/boots then skis to turn ( with great great effort ) into a right turn ! Verbiar ski bum that is the BAD BAD ineffective ski habit persons are learning! To force skis to turn !

Skis LOVE to turn,,,if you ask them, if you suggest to them, if you allow them to turn!

This bad habit is then passed along for many ,,,many years as person become an "expert" in forcing skis to turn !

Just my opinion !

I have accepted that the skis are in charge,,,,I am just along for the ride,,,the view and the experience ! It makes for a more pleasant time on the slopes !

Success is

"when preparation meets opportunity " !

In short,,,,,prepare yourself and when that "moment comes" JUMP !

The ski world if full of "ski addicts" who have left the "apparent" safe, rich "prestige loaded" life and found a job cleaning floors, washing dishes, etc,,,anything as long as it is near ski resort !

You all have just one life ! Live it to its fullest !

Dave Mac, loved your story because it reminds me so much of past events !

I hear skiers complaint that skiing is so "expensive" so let me share with you how inexpensive it can be !

At one point in my life I had 6 children skiing with me and we "managed" !

The owner of a ski resort needed a "weekend" janitor/security/manager for his inn ! I heard he was looking for someone just for weekends to replace full time staff !

I proposed a "deal" which he could not refuse!

For a family season pass, an on the slope condo I was willing to be that janitor/security/manager ! For 10 years from Friday to Sunday I would do the rounds at the inn, check doors, close main doors, visit unruly, loud guests, open rooms for late late arrivals ( 1 AM ),,show drunk skiers to their rooms, hide young male skiers from their parents, hide older female skiers from their children,,,etc,,,, !

My son was the youngest "barman" in the area, ( seems he also was most "popular" ) ! Haaaa,,,,,the adventures I had ! Haaaa,,,,the adventures my sons had ( that I am now hearing about !!!!)

Skiing "expensive",,,,,,,????? It all depends on you !

rossyhead,
My son graduated from a well know university, but did not know what to "focus" on! He just took a year "off" and went to a ski resort! He did not have a penny!

I found some friends who were ski instructors, patrollers and groomers! They were renting a large ski cottage! I did say he had no money, so he worked for the group; washing, cleaning, shoveling, etc,,,Soon he was replacing them when they were sick,,or too tired to drive the trucks!
By November he was known as the "one who did everything" at the ski resort! Cafeteria short in staff,,,,he was asked to
Night shift on the snow guns were short,,,he was there to help out.
Marketing staff had to show ski center to a ski writer,,,,,he was there as guide.

In short he was there when needed! Salary was never discussed, but soon the manager pass him an envelope with money!

He discovered the life of the ski gyspsy!

Sasha is now a Director of a large Multi-national company and just a few days ago he casually mentioned to me, " dad thanks for not making feel guilty about taking a year off to find my bearings. It was one of my very best years "!

Amazing what people will do when they need help, reliable staff,,,,, Bandit ! The ski world is full of ski gypsies! I have an "open budget" for emergencies and yes the "directives" do not allow me to hire ski gypsies,,but when work has to be done fast, well,,,it is done !
