Best mitts?
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 3 Replies
Several years ago I was given a pair of mitts to test for two months. They appeared to be very normal, typical mitts however they had a small pocket where you can insert "heat pack"!

At -30 they kept me warm!

There is a common myth that getting thick mitts will keep hands warm!

The best way to keep hands warm is the following;
1. Keep body core warm at all times since it is the blood from your body core that keeps hands warm.
2.Insert heat packs ( when needed) around wrists
3. Never take gloves off
4.Do not breath into gloves
5. I have a cheap hair dryer that I use to "heat" inside of boots and gloves in the morning!
6. One of the places cold enters is interface between gloves and jacket cuff! I have discovered that tennis wrist collars are great to keep heat in!

In the Spring I wear thin gloves and place tennis wrist collars over gloves so that wet snow does not enter gloves!

The same wrist collars are great Ipod warmers and protectors. Just get a nice ribbon to hold Ipod over neck.

Hope this gives you some ideas how to make hands warmer! As last resort you might do as Eskimos do. Place cold nake hands on girlfriend's bare stomach for about 2 hours!
It will warm you up!!!!

If you know anything about wines, you accept that some years are better than others. Well the smart skier will buy some "left-over" race skis from the 2007 season because they will become much desired items in the coming years!

Why?

In 2008 FIS will change the specifications for "true race FIS" skis since there were too many accidents on race course. The race skis in 2008 will be "more tame" in side cut! This means that the 2007 edition race skis will have the "ultimate" radical side cuts!

The physical position of skis is not important however what is;
1. Place DIN scale to 0
2.Wax skis and cover steel edges with "all-purpose" wax
3.Insert elastic bands on ski brakes
4. Place used towel between skis

Of course you should never place skis close to heat source or very damp area!

Worst place to "store" skis is in garage!

Hope this helps you!
The power of the net again demonstrated!

Now really impress me and tell us about a ski that has FOUR steel edges per ski and its vocation!

In "technical terms" this is called higher order cognitive skills!
Interesting logo for Spyder!
What are the origins?
Why the black spyder?
5 hints that a skier is a pro!!!
Started by User in Ski Technique, 17 Replies
Well I waited two weeks for a skier that wanted some Atomic Ski bindings but no one got 5 items. Some came close but...

Here are the five idications that the skier beside you is a pro! Pro defined as someone who works in the ski business!

A comment first!
One indication does not make a ski pro but as you start to see more of the clues then chances are they really are the "pro" !

1. The boots! Not the type or the color but look at the inside of each boot( the side away from buckles). If you see sharp cutting lines near boot sole, very much like razor lines!
You are looking at the first hint that this skier has;
a) very sharp ski edges
b) skis very tight turns
c)knows what weight transfer means

2. Gloves
Gloves take about a year to form to hands! Ski pros swear by their gloves and will not change gloves unless they fall apart. Look for that duct silver tape around the thumb area! Look for duct tape around first finger!

3. Yes the famous smell! ( in men) Most male pros do their "wash" once every 30 days! Skiers do not realized that you sweat a lot in powder or when skiing hard so it mellows like wine until they realize no one goes on the lift with them. Perhaps the school director will have to tell them to wash!

4. Face
The raccoon look will appear so clearly once you know what to look for! Of course that quiet smile of a liberated man or women!

5. The bulge
All ski pros ( even when undercover) have an electronic device, ie some form of communication system in case of accidents, classes, course work!
If you are very attentive you will note on the right hand breast pocket a small slit for the antenna ( hidden of course) or a clip insert on the collar for mike!

As far as Ipods-not allowed on duty
As far as drinks-not allowed on any ski resort

So next time you are on lift watch, learn and enjoy yourself!
Too confident?

The comments given by the above skiers are excellent.
May I ask for more precision.
Am I to understand that you are going to ski in April and you want to buy boots IN APRIL!!
Poor move!

Let me try to explain the importance of boots by using the analogy of marriage! You will quickly understand why you must NOT wait until April to buy boots at ski resort!

First vital question in marriage and buying boots is, " I am committed for life in this lifestyle"
If yes....why wait! Do it now!!!

Second question.
How much is this marriage or boots going to cost me?
I have never met a couple that thinks of the cost of marriage ( initially) once thy have decided to live together. Later they will!
So you should not consider the cost of the boots. You get for what you pay. Buy cheaper you get cheap!
Your questions were very relevant when you focussed on the "level" and not cost!
Do you know the difference between a beginner vs expert boot!

Third question
Will boots give me pleasure, like marriage is giving me pleasure. I am not talking about erotic pleasure here but "karma" pleasure!
The first skier spoke of it.
It is that togetherness, that blending of you and the boot feeling!

Fourth and last question
Will boots like my wife make rise to the occassion. Am I a better man or skier because of the boots!

Keeping in mind the above questions, let us look at some aspects of the boots you should know!
Like in marriage, buying boots is often a "emotional" issue so you do not research the subject. Here are some facts!

1. Shell mold
Not all boots are born equally. The are various molds and you must first try all types of boots to find mold that fits you! Like in your pre-marriage days!!!!

2. Get to know different types of boots, like in your pre-marriage days! Find out what makes a shell flex more or less! Find out which boots are more "forgiving" just like a women!

3.Find out if boot will last at least 10 years. Hopefully your goal for marriage is a lifetime!
The question is how do you do this!

Here is an short form course called boot fitting 101. The above last reply mentionned an excellent boot fitter, but you must know something about your needs before you go see your boot fitter! Like in marriage you must know what you want in a wife so that the pressure points, the flex adjustments, the lateral tensions, and finally the feeling you get while undertaking your activity will be "pleasurable".

Boot Facts
The more proficient you become the more you want boot to "hold you", thus shell has high flex index! ( race boots typically have flex index of 150-160)
*very important value this flex index

The more proficient a skier you are the less "padding" you want. Typically beginner boots have lots of foam with thick linners. Racing boots have very little foam and very little shell thickness! Do not buy racing boots because of this!!!

The more proficient you are in skiing the more feedback you want from boots about ski, snow and your ski position. That means you want "real time interface" ie your boots tell you exactly how you are skiing!
This means orthotics
This means special ski socks
This means "perhaps modified boots"

What must you do?

1. Read all ski /boots tests
2.Visit all ski shops in area and try on all boots. Cheap to racing ( even if you do not buy them). Quickly you will see difference. (Like marriage)
3.Slowly eliminate boots due to; price, poor fit etc...
4.Pick two models
5. Visit internet and locate best price!
6. Ski on them BEFORE your holiday
7. Make changes BEFORE your holiday

Please allow me a final comment!
I would never buy a boot while on holiday! Like in marriage it takes some time to "fit" into a new sitaution! You are in effect "gambling" that all will work out. That you will find that magic boot at the XYZ shop!!
Also you will not be an effective skier for at least 3-4 days after you try on boots. Let us accept that the boots are great, fit you well, you still have to "allow" you brain time to get comfortable with the new feedback the boots are giving! You need time alone with the boots. Find out its limits!
I have found that men do not perform very well under pressure! Give yourself time to get to know your boots in all conditions!

Besides marriage, the purchase of your new boots might very well be the most important decision you will make. Take time!

I promise you, if you take the time, you will have heaven on earth! They will take you to places you have no idea existed!
They will give you pleasures that will last a lifetime.
That is why take your time!!!!
In my haste to list skiing sins I forgot the most silly, no dumb skiing sin I have ever witnessed!
We will classify this one sin six !

Some ski resorts have the old fashion bubble 4 skier egg type ski lift! You know the ones that are just big enough to hold 4 smallish skiers.

Great skiing day, warm, sun and few skiers!
We get on ( my best friend) with two adolescents! After a bried discussion about the great snow and runs, one of the ados takes out a bag and begins to roll a joint of weed!
Trying to impressing us by telling us about this genetic modified weed he is growing just a few kilometers from center and how his parents had no idea where he got the money to buy his fancy skis, fuit and etc...

Just as he was about to light his joint , I casually ask my friend ( who had very long hair, coke spoon around neck and stud on ear), "Louis how was that last bust you did at the rock concert?"
You see Louis was an undercover federal agent, besides being a ski fanatic!

Silence in cabin! The match was lit but burning ever so slowly about 2 cm. from joint!
Louis looking straight into the ados eyes softly says, "Pav it was a great cocain bust"!

I could see the match burning skin! Not a sound! With a flick of the wrist the match was thrown out, but the joint was still just barely held on the lips!

It was the moment of truth! I could see the young lad's mind racing thinking what to do!
Louis then started to casually discuss the results of the bust and all the paper work!
When he said, "well I am on holiday today but tommorrow I'll be back, so where did you say you live?"
The relief was so evident!

Sin 6 is to smoke while skiing! Worst is to smoke inside a lift! The very worst is to smoke inside a lift with an undercover police officer!
Not cool!
Someone should tell the lads about the 60's!

We forgave him ( due to his youth) for the day!
