Please forgive my ignorance but why does this mean you will never wear a helment? My wife and I are shopping for our first buckets before we go to Austria in Jan.

Thanks

I got a clear message that I was supposed to slow down and stop, which I did. I believe that putting ourselves in all kinds of protection actually places us closer to the danger we seek to avoid, I also think it gives us a greater sense of infallibilty. The caveat to this is beyond our control and that is other piste frequenters, this is a good reason for protection. I rode in Chile this year 3 weeks after breaking my collarbone and fracturing my skull on my bike, no helmet. In terms of protection on the slopes it was the best thing I ever did.

As a helmet user, I've not noticed any extra feeling of infallibility. I guess it's a personal thing. I also use a back protector, but don't feel the need to do this...

any more than I did 5/10/15 years ago.

He was at the Ski show on the Whitedot Skis stand. I missed out

I think the biggest factor to increased feelings of infalibility is a couple of Vin Chauds / Glüweins before the last run home. A helmet might protect against such wreckless nonsense (in my case anyway).

It's a personal thing Bandit. My passion for riding is down to speed, If I can't learn how to do this safely I shouldn't do it. Protection would only give me a false sense of security and send me off on questionable goals. My nature is not suited to it, I think it would be dangerous.

now you are mixing 2 topics. If you belive that a drink on the mountain adds risk to the 3rd party then lets discuss that. I tend to agree on principle, which might shock a few :) however if an individual choses this risk aginst his or her own health, then who am I to stop them?? One of the reasons that sports like skiing or surfboarding or kayaking are increasingly popular is because it puts some risk back into what has increasingly become a safe and sterile life.

I never wear a seat belt when driving a car, because if I do, I may be tempted to drive dangerously and cause an accident. I really don't understand why the insurance companies are so in favour of seat belts. People would drive more safely if they didn't wear them, and the injury rate would be reduced.

Just kidding, but I seem to remember these arguments abounded when the seat belt laws were being introduced.
