Oh dear, we do seem to have drifted OT. Does j2ski do helmet threads ad infinitum like snowheads? If not then this ski-injury.com thread and its links are worth reading. OTOH if the helmet debate has already been thrashed here, why do it again?

I am also looking to invest in a nut protector this year.
Dont get me wrong, I dont ski particlaurly fast or adventure anywhere that could be considered doangerous. I just feel that it is better to be safe than sorry and I dread the thought of a fall in the early morning icey piste all for the sake of 60 quid.

It is up to the individual whether they feel they need to wear a lid or not I will continue to not wear one until the law changes, what I find very strange is a thread last year where people were talking about skiing with their ipods on and when questioned they seemed to think there was no safety aspect to their use whilst skiing.

I've been a helmet wearer for about 5 or 6 years. I wouldn't venture onto the slopes without one.
The most important bit of ski equipment you will ever own is the 6 inches between your ears, makes sense to me to protect it.
Being careful isn't enough.
Do I ski faster wearing a helmet? No. Do I take more risks than I used to? No.

So many resorts pack their pistes down very hard, it feels like falling on tarmac. Until resorts stop excessive slope grooming, I think it's safer for me to choose to wear a helmet on piste.

I was in a Quiksilver shop recently and they were selling off the beanies that have a protective liner that goes rigid, for £5, down from £50. Some racers use it in their Skinsuits I think.

This sort of thing but a different brand AIR....

I can see the benefit of any protective clothing ,if I was skiing off piste I would wear one maybe the protective beaneys is a possible way to go, I will be interested to see the percentage of people wearing
a lid on the slopes this year 8)

For me part of the fun in skiing is the "hope" of a beautiful sunny day and the wind blowing over my scalp (bald) and the thought of wearing a helmet is an anathema

Oh I think the numbers of people wearing helmets is going up, and dramtically too. Possibly because they are now also rwgarded as having a kudos rating in much the same way a pair of skis or a jacket does, ie its a fashion item.
The type and range of helmets on offer has increased so you can find ones that actually look ok. I always thought skiers in helmets looked like people on day release, but some of them now look ok.

For me its a personal choice, same as Tino. I do understand that it takes some other idiot to cause an accident, and that cannot be avoided at any time no matter where or how well you ski. But I have had lots of falls in my time, and never whacked my head, so I guess I feel like I dont need to worry about it. Wrong? It probably is, but its my choice. You cant go around telling me that I should wear a helmet when we have been skiing for years without worrying about it until recently.
Obviously ski racers is a different matter, the speeds they are going on sheet ice!

I also think I would find it claustrophobic and it would annoy me. Even wearing a hat at times annoys me, itchy head etc, but quite useful in the cold!

The comparison between a helmet and a seat belt is nonsense, sorry Trencher. Thats completely different, although I appreciate the comment about how people felt when the law was brought in.

At the moment its a choice people can make. I certainly dont feel like I am running a risk by not wearing a helmet. If I did, I would get one. Until I do, or until the laws change, I will choose to feel the wind through (whats left of) my hair and the sun on my head. Hopefully that idiot who has had 15 gluweins will keep well away from me and my head.
