Karen, the strength of north facing resorts is better quality, and longer lasting snow. In early January the sun doesn't get onto the slopes, although it is certainly a sun trap on the top slopes.

Thanks for your reply.

That is good to know that the sun will be round onto the beginner slopes. I will take the thirty extra layers I bought for the kids back to the shops ) lol

Actually, talking about layers. Will 1 pair of thermal bottoms be enough to put under their sallopettes? I remember having to wear a pair of tights, with a pair of jogging bottoms and then the saloppets on top? (mind that was many moons ago, probably before thermals were invented lol)

A little bird tells me that the prices mentioned might be negotiable.

Wasn't there a plan for J2Skiers to buy some real estate? I recall that Admin Dave couldn't manage his 10p.

If i were mortgage free a this moment in time then yes i would defo be interested Dave. How about you ?
I still daydream of living in Austria one day but until then i`ll just have to live with holidays.

One good thermal layer under their sallopettes should be fine, and also a good pair of socks.

Hi,

Well I got back from Niederau last Sunday, but what with having to go straight back to work, I’m only just getting round to posting here. I had a fabulous week in Niederau, and it was a great way to spend new year.

The snow was great, and it even snowed on new year’s day for us too. I booked into ski school, and had a lovely local instructor – he was so patient!! He really was a great instructor – he spent a lot of time on technique and various exercises in the morning and then spent the afternoon going for longer runs. He was really good at boosting your confidence. We even did the Lanerkopfl black run back into the village a few times. The views along here were really spectacular. I agree with Dave Mac about there being several different way to ski down the same run. Every time we did a run, my instructor seemed to take us a slightly different route. I was fascinated by this!!

The ski school highlight of the week has to be the races. The ski school organise a race for all the various groups, with a prize giving in one of the hotels in the evening. They really do make an effort. I think the instructors seem to get quite competitive amongst themselves – my instructor insisted on waxing our skis before we raced as the conditions “were very slow”. Unfortunately this didn’t help me win – but I did get a silver medal, and it was great fun. I think one of Dave Mac’s friends won his class, and got a little cup. It really is worth taking part in these races, if only so that you can go to the prize giving, and see the instructors making music, and dancing!!

Another must was the ski school show on the Sunday evening followed by a gluwhein (or 2) in Bobo’s.

I really enjoy the friendly relaxed atmosphere that you get in Niederau, and the fact that everyone is so welcoming. The après ski is second to none and everyone should make at least one visit to the sport café to see Gunther!. The fact that there is not hundreds of km of piste doesn’t bother me. I’m still a novice skier, and am happy in ski school, to continue to learn and improve and am happy to ski what’s available, and feel as if I’m part of a small friendly village.

It of course was also great to meet Dave Mac and Jan, even if I did see Dave Mac whizzing past me on several occasions! I’m looking forward to my next visit now.

I have to say, I get nervous when I hear stories of instructors pushing their students for the end of week race. A number of years ago, a guy in my ski school class suffered a very severe compound fracture in the ski race - the instructor had recommended that people get their bindings set to a tighter level for the race which the poor guy did. At the end of the race course, he ran into some soft snow - the skis stopped but he didn't, the bindings held and his leg was badly broken . We subsequently learnt that the instructors used to bet on whose students would win the race (the different classes at the same level raced against each other).

I should stress that this happened in Italy not Neidereau.
