AllyG I enjoy doing DIY on all my holidays and lots of Googling usually finds a bargain, the guy that owned the Villa put us in touch with a couple of chaps who look after various properties and have a couple of mini bus's, one of them owned the pub in the village the other owned the shop!

I am off to Mayrhofen this Feb and looking forward to comparing and contrasting.
Welcome to the loony bin, great first post. I am pleased to hear you had a good time over in Bulgaria, as all other reports I have had first hand suggest the opposite. Maybe stopping outside Borovets itself was your best option.

Now you can join in the fun more often on here!

Mayrhofen - great place, somewhere I know pretty well. If you want any info on the place, feel free to PM me.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly wouldn't chose Borovets over elsewhere if money wasn't an issue ... but it is :)

I've skiied all over the world and it's certainly not comparable for many things but it's good enough to get on the snow for week without breaking the bank.

For instance, we paid £20 train from Newcastle to Manchester - £35 flights Manchester to Sofia & 70€ return transfer from Sofia - Borovets

Home to ski resort - under £100 :)

verglas wrote:My Borovets, just to clarify, it was 3k for 5 people (my family) all in, Ally is paying 3.3k for 3 without grub, so whilst there is a significant difference its not quite what you state.

Cheers.

I say one word 'Courchevel'.

Once upon a time Brovets was the cheapest place to go, that's why I went there. But since they have been upping there prices dramatically over the last few years there are now much better places at comparable prices.

Soldeu in 2008/9 for example cost me the same as Borovets the year before...and there was no comparison.

This beats working, have to be careful and avoid adiction!

The two years prior to Borovets I spent in Poiana Brasov in Romania, (my taste for cost saving is limitless!) again I thought it a lovely little resort, but very limited skiing. we again were lucky with the snow but the weeks prior to departure were nail biting.

If Poiana had a better snow record it should be considered by anyone wanting to learn to ski, picturesque, clean, value for money, very good tuition.
We'll be fine!

Verglas,
Did your costings include ski lessons? I'm ashamed to admit that lessons are a very large item on our bill. We're all having different sorts of lessons, but it's working out at an average bill of £250 per person for 6 days. My lessons are the most expensive - 330 euros for 6 days, morning and afternoon .

The lift pass is the other killer - 216 euros for 7 days for the Courchevel one.

The accommodation, transfers, and train cost about £600 per person.

I haven't costed out food because I'm not planning on spending much more than we do at home (apart from the fact that I suppose the basic ingredients will cost a bit more in the supermarket). We will be cooking in the apartment.

Borovets is definitely much cheaper than Courchevel. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum. We started with Borovets, and then moved up the scale in both quality and price, once we could afford it.

Ally

Probably Caron-a!

Tony your reviews are part of the reason I chose the Hoff, so well done, you better be right!

The combination of the gentle stuff on the Ahorn for my better half and No 1 daughter and some more adventurous opps for me and the other two kids was very apealling, we usuallly ski together in the morning, have lunch together then split up meeting again at the bar afterwards.
We'll be fine!
