My folks live in Rosas, on the hill overlooking the new harbour! My old man has his boat at Emporiabrava (wher i did my first freefall parachute). my sister and significant other live there also, they are both scuba diving instructors.

The coastline around that area is stunning, especially up towards the French border. What time of year do you get over to Calelle de Palafrugell?

We used to holiday just between Rosas and Empuriabrava for a few years, and then ended up stumbling across Calella de Palafrugel one day when taking a drive out. Its such a gorgeous little place, and we are usually there between 25th May approx and around 7th June. Unfortunately, this year we are not going because flight prices have rocketed, and not all the family are able to make it, which is a shame as it has become something of an annual pilgrimage for many years. Its the first time in about 12 years we wont be going :(

Shame you will not be going Tony, it's a beautiful part of the world :) The prices on Ryanair have become a joke, there is a direct flight from Baden-karlsruhe to Girona which I used to use, but it has become prohibitively expensive now unless you fly mid-week to mid-week, which I can't normally.

Hmmmm, slightly off-topic, but just flown in from Valencia today. Easyjet, only half full. Flight out only 2/3 full, can't help feeling that the lo-co's can't keep this up. Price was fine though. Tino_11, looked at Rosas and surrounds about 4 years ago, out of our price bracket, ended up buying a place 2 hours south of Barcelona. Just had a week full of Chubasco's

Tend to agree about the so called cheap airlines. Now that Ryanair and Easyjet are adding extras on for baggage etc, their flights are no longer what I would call low cost. Yes, you can still get the odd bargain if you travel light or are a business user, but I cant seem to get anywhere for under £100 return for what I would call a worthwhile trip.
I have even found Thomson or First Choice cheaper to a lot of destinations nowadays, if you book flights and hotels seperately.
For instance, 1 weeks in Skiathos in Sept, online package price £846 per person (yes, its a posh hotel). However, booking the same flights and the hotel seperately, it came out to £374 per person. That is a ridiculous saving, and just goes to show ot does pay to spend the time looking into things in more detail.

ellistine,

Have you named your boat yet ??

I have a little story about a sailing boat which sailed from the UK to Nova Scotia in 1930. It was a ketch called "Seaplane". The story is that the owner, G.F.G. Plooard was planning a trip to the US to take part in a race from Boston to Halifax. He was in a pub talking up his plans and searching for a couple of crew mates. Anyway, he ended up in Bedford Basin which today can be seen in this web cam site:http://cam.artmosher.ca/ Maybe "Seaplane" may be a name to consider. There is more to the story which I'll send you via PM.

Mike

Bandit-budget airlines make their money in the peak times, and lose money in the off-season. Would regard just now as "off season" so wouldn't imagine them being full.

Been flying into Valencia on budget airlines for a number of years.Used to fly there on BA, but they pulled the service. Last year we started seeing empty seats on Thomsonfly, this year they pulled the service-coincidence, maybe. Now seeing empty seats on Easyjet.
Until last year, all the flights we used were pretty full.
It's not really a big touristy airport, so scheduled operators, should not have too many peaks and troughs.
