This thread really tickles me...I am one of the people who doesn't lock his skis or boot bag and has also traveled light for a weeks sking with just hand luggage. You just need to be a bit cute. Wear at much as you can to get on the aircraft including your ski jacket and gloves...after all it is winter!...once in departures take it off and put it in a carrier bag ....just like carrying duty free. Wear synthetic wicking clothes that are not heavy or bulky and you can wash them daily (if required) as it dries easily on a radiator and you still have load of room for the fashion statement in the bar....not that anyone who is skiing gives a dam  I take at least 3 pairs of ski socks and 5 layering stuff and I still manage to carry a kettle, T bags and sugar as well.

Of course the other side to this is that of airline profits. having been involved with these metal boxes in a past life the story is all about payload. Less payload better fuel efficiency...more profit for a full aircraft. So airlines charge for extra weight. But what really p****s me of is paying more to carry my skis and boots and a suitcase on difficultjet I find myself stuck seated between 2 FF who each weigh more than me,my case and skis combined but don't have to pay extra for being overweight lazy prats!

I put boots on the suitcases along with helmet and build the clothing in and around them. OH takes a boot bag with her in the suitcase and then carries her boots to the lockers if there are any.
Re the convo on the amount of clothing..... It's personal preference and also experience of what you do and do not use over time. I also have merino wool stuff, swear by it! But I know people who where t shirt one night when out then wear during the day the next, before new clean top the next night and so on.
Having paid for a board / ski bag we do have a little more space for clothing etc. I have a set of travel scales too to ensure the weight split is correct....

In preparation for our first trip this season in a fortnight I got the ski bag out of the garage last night, weighed it empty at 6.5kg, weighed skis at 6.8kg...with Thomson's 15 kg limit this doesn't leave an awful lot for 'padding' in the ski bag :( Weighed the hold bag...just under 5 kg, ski boots are 5.5kg to go in hold luggage or seperate (either way Thomson reckon their weight is deducted from hold allowance)leaving me a total allowance of 11.2kg for all my ski kit, wash bag and evening clothes plus chargers, ipad etc etc... Carry on allowance of 5kg is usually taken up by duty free :)
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Huwcyn wrote:Well, Tony H, here's the bit I don't get. How can you get to a significantly lower weight than I, because I certainly am not extravagant when I pack? I will not however, wear the same clothes all week, and I don't want to wash clothes on holiday, especially if there's every chance they might not dry properly. I allow about two or three evenings for casual wear, and the rest - I've explained.

I pack my case with ski boots, all my base layers and fleeces (3 of each), a pair of casual shoes, 6 tops to wear through the week (one each night is the plan) and then underwear and washbag. Thats pretty much around 18-20kg.
Then, pack all your ski clothing (sallos and jackets, 3 of each usually) around your skis in a ski bag, plus a pair of proper apres ski shoes (Merrell walking shoes) and throw in a 4 plug extension cable and 2 packs of mars/twix and bobs your uncle. Youve got plenty with you without upsetting anyone with overweight bags. My ski bag never weighs over 15kg.

Simples, as those stupid animals say.

So you're not packing lighter than me at all then, really. I don't have skis, and all my stuff comes in around the 18kg mark, ...............until these boots came along! I pack virtually exactly the same amount of clothing as you
