Heres the bit I dont get - how can you need 17-18kg in a suitcase for a weeks skiing not including your boots????

You hardly need 3 pairs of jeans, 8 pairs of shoes, etc etc.

Your ski wear is lightweight so doesnt weigh much, although I do pack most of mine in my ski bag keeping my suitcase weight down and allowing nicely for boots.

Yes there is an issue with hand luggage weight and size, each airline is different, and i believe it isnt the airline that makes up the rules about taking ski boots as hand luggage but the security at certain airports that make their own rules up here!!!!

Some folks don't want to wear/wash clothes whilst away. I know personally I don't want to wear the same top every evening therefore I tend to take more clothing than most, but there again having seen some people on skiing holidays wear the same clothes all week....ewww, that's just manky!

I find that you lose a kilo or two on the bag itself these days which doesn't help!
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

I have never locked any kind of bag or suitcase on the plane - and I've never had anything nicked.

How do the customs people open locked bags if they want to check what's in them when you're not there? Do they have master keys or what?

Well, Tony H, here's the bit I don't get. How can you get to a significantly lower weight than I, because I certainly am not extravagant when I pack? I will not however, wear the same clothes all week, and I don't want to wash clothes on holiday, especially if there's every chance they might not dry properly. I allow about two or three evenings for casual wear, and the rest - I've explained.

Merino is very soft, and it is also boiled prior to processing, which makes it even softer. It feels softer than cotton, or any other fabric.

It is expensive, but I see that Aldi are doing a base layer for twenty something pounds. Thats a good price, and Aldi generally are good on quality.

I have three Merino tops, costing around £100/120 each. They have given best value of any item of gear I have.
My Kuhl Team 1/4 zip had completely worn out, and I searched for a year, as many UK mountain shops, best I could get was to buy from America.
Then I chanced on Kehl's FB page, they gave me the wholesaler email address, and a week later, I had bought two new ones, at £95 each, delivered.
I only wear a merino base and a merino top, and a ski jacket, and that covers me for a large range of temperature conditions. It is a really light way to carry gear.
Oh, and I only ever take one pair of trousers, and, errm, I wear them at the airport....
