people - stingy
language - English (I have only ever heard one person speak Gaelic, but for some reason signs are in both languages in a lot of the Highlands)

Why Pablo I am quite shocked at you !!!  :D
My flatmate from uni speaks fluent Gaelic and in fact works for the University of the Highlands and Islands promoting Gaelic, both nationally and internationally.
And stingy - what  My great-grandfather worked as a medical missionary both abroad and in Glasgow, and the family were always short of money because he gave away his medicines to the poor of Glasgow.
I think you need to forget about whatever essay it is you are writing at the moment and start researching Scotland as a matter of priority :D.

I think that you will find that Pablo is fluent in Columbian!

Dave,
Her mother is American, and her father is Scottish, and she was brought up in Scotland, so I suppose she could have learnt a bit of Gaelic as a child, but I know she studied it when she returned to Scotland after she was at Uni with me in Wales (nearly 30 years ago now, I'm afraid to say). I am still in touch with her, and I saw her mother a few months ago. I am very proud of her for becoming fluent in Gaelic :D.
My own brother-in-law speaks Irish, and masses of people can speak Welsh - so the ancient languages of these islands are still going strong.
Maybe you could put the thread back on topic and tell us something about the history of ski-ing in Scotland? It would make pleasant bed-time reading. :D

Ally, my closest pal, Pete, who died 30 years ago, we were at school together. Then we were fell walkers, jointly ran a scout group, shared girlfriends, and ....., we started Trans Pennine Ski Club. We started trips from Manchester, at £7 per weekend, half board! We must have introduced thousands of people to skiing. The trips rapidly gained momentum, until there were two coaches a week to Cairngorm.
Then I changed my life, and went to work in Austria. After 4 seasons in Austria, and a year in Australia, I came to Scotland. I have a strong interest in Scottish Jacobite history, and Austrian Napoleonic resistance history.
Neither of which qualifies for discussion on a ski website. :-o
As for language, I speak English, some German, a small amount of French, all as a method of communication. If you learned the Gallic as a child, that is the same. If you learn it in later life, isn't that a hobby?
