Sorry but I am still gonna put a covering of wax over my bases it has served me well so far
And I see no reason to stop.

Talking of wax ,my friends just paid £120 for 20 grams of wax for his daughters ski's . Only posting because I was shocked at the price .
He did say that it would knock a minute off 5 miles though

ATOO,
You do not apply wax just to shave off seconds. 99% of skiers do not race and what is the point of going straight down a course! The fun is in making the run last a long long time!

You apply wax to protect base.

You apply wax to get a better glide so that you are "floating" on bubbles of wax molecules.

You apply wax so that you barely do anything to set an edges.

As far as cost,,,,I get mine "wholesale" in kilo bars under 7 euros for 2 kilos! Of course if you buy in a ski shop resort,,,,,,

pavelski,
I know dude ,I only posted because it was 10 times the amount I paid for a block of wax .
Kurt did say it's only a top coat wax and comes in powder form .His daughter is in training for the Biathlon and if you miss the target you get a 60 second penalty so I guess every second counts .
He also buys base wax in bulk and spends 20 hours a week waxing her ski's from November till May.
Didn't want to bore you with the details before, I only posted because it was wax related and at a totally different scale of wax to what I use and thought it was interesting.
But thanks for the information on how and why I should be using wax.

ATOO,
Ha,,,the key word was Biathlon !

I apologize in that context,,,the seconds count and the wax is key!

Wrong wax and you are in the low group!

That powder form is called Fluo wax and is more expensive than cocaine in my area!

Be very careful using this powder form since the fumes do cause "secondary effects" in the brain !

In the past Olympics ski tuners used shipping containers as "mobile ski tuning waxing rooms! Several technicians began to show "strange behaviors", perceptual problems and breathing problems! Now all technicians must wear masks and there must be some form of ventilation since at a given temperature range this powder instantly becomes a gas !

You did not bore me with the details, since few skiers even bother to wax skis!

We did a study with a junior ski team ( ages 11-14 ) to see what made the difference in the first 10 best skiers ! Was it the ski design, the ski wax or the ski technique ! The very first parameter that determines placement is ski technique above all others! Ski tuning was second. The waxing at the junior level does not seem to help ! That is for the top 10 skiers!

Great for the mind!

Good Luck to the young lady!

Pavel

It's just wax, most of us use a Universal Wax which does nicely all the time :D No point in getting anal about it, too many doing that already by the look of it )
