Back from shop , spoke to the guy who assured me that they would be fine to suit my level and needs . I would like to think that he knew what he was talking about and not trying to baffle me with science !!!!!!!!!

Like everyone else, I think they are too short.

On a more positive note, I can't see how swapping them for exactly the same ski only longer would be a problem for the shop.

This might help you check what size you need:

I ride all mountain Volkl Vertigo Motions in a 185cm ski length & I am 6"1, general rule of thumb when sizing freeride skis was that the ski should measure upto the brow of the eye. Technology & changes in ski design seam to have changed the above rule & a lot more folk appear to be using shorter length skis, I recently inquired about some new Volkl freeride skis & found the ski best suited was 177cm in length.
I think you would be able to get away with 170 intermediate skis but 177cm ski or similar would better suit your needs.

I don't think the skis are necessarily too short, at your level. However the weight range of that ski, for the length is up to about 14 stone. As stiffness generally increases with length in a ski model, heavier people tend to ski longer skis, whether they need the length or not. So what you need is a stiffer ski, because at your weight, you can flex a ski easily. You could try to sell the Solomons, or see how they work for you on snow. You may find you like the feel of being able to flex the ski easily, especially as you ski on piste. If you have been renting in the past, I din't think you will have used a stiffer ski then. When you buy another pair of skis, you should be most interested in the flex. Some on piste expert skis, and race skis, will have stiffer flex. While you might not be an expert, your weight will allow you to flex a stiffer skis like an expert. Race skis can be detuned to make them less demanding, and more user friendly, but still have the stiffer flex you need.
