I know what you mean about New Year Tony, but last year, a group of us from our village had a really good New Year, the whole week was good, but NY Eve, and NY Days night were special. This year, if we don't ski, we will hit the north of Scotland, or go somewhere.

But, due to circumstance, last year was expensive.

I don't mind waiting a couple of minutes more in the queue for a good week. Anyway, the left side of the queue is always quicker!

Re the elevation question, we have discussed this before. Early season, without it being an exceptional year, most of Europe's resorts operate on a combination of artificial snow and the real stuff. If it is cold enough, you can get down. My worst memory is skiing the Sella Ronda, (35~40km) on a 40m wide artificial piste, surrounded by grass. Nice mountains though!

The alternative is to go high. Then you have to consider that, early season, for 50% of the time, the weather adversely interacts with ski operations.

So three years ago, in Zermatt, we had a great week skiing. However, the week before, the link over to Italy had been closed for the whole week. Have had a similar experience in Saas Fee, Whistler.

Hey, how is the new job going?

Interesting, as I ALWAYS go in January and recently have been going again in March/April too.
The January trips have never been affected by adverse weather. In fact, its often been sunny and bright and all lift open in different resorts.
The March trips have seen lift closures, piste closures, thick fog, whiteouts, and hot temperatures.
I have to say in my relatively short skiing experience that the January trips have always been the better ones in terms of the weather and its effect on the ski area.

The new job is..............a new job. Thanks for asking.

The alpine palace was newly built about 2 years ago and is the only 5* hotel in the resort. It is attached to the old building and they are still selling the rooms in the old hotel which are a much lower standard so make sure you get a room in the new building!

Saalbach is a bit lower than some other resorts but they have excellent snow making facilitys and only really struggle at the end of the season. The lift network is fantastic so you don't even have to use the lower runs, but dec jan it should be fine anyway.

Although the palace is 5* it is also in hinterglemm which can tend to be a bit quieter than saalbach, although they have a couple of good apres ski bars.

Hotels post and neuhaus are right in the center of saalbach and quite nice. If you're looking for good food then you should try Wechselberger www.wechselberger.at/wechselberger/index.php 3* and not sure what the rooms are like but the food is outstanding.

Maybe book the palace and eat in the wechselberger!
