If there was snow flying (the panache), they were skiding.
When this is done on alpine snowboards, it is possible to to use only the rear half of the board and carve a smaller circle. This is considered cheating, but I notice if I want to tighten a turn on skis I do the same. Maybe that's what The Meercat saw.
