Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has stayed at Mayrhofen in one of the Guest Houses or 'Snowhomes'?
They are apparently dotted in and around the village, and seem cheap and fairly sparse. Was just wondering how small/sparse etc.
I dont mind a walk of less than ten mins or so to the gondolas or village, but would be helpful to have any info to alleviate a moody/tired girlfriend on the first day :)
Cheers!

If she gets too moody and tired saying things like "but these random guys on an internet forum said it was not very far so just keep walking" will only make her angry ;-)

I've stayed in plenty of them and never been disappointed, given the relatively low cost involved.
They typify Austrian b and b, with warm, clean accomodation and a decent breakfast. Allhave a ski room, I think.
Mayrhofen has many ski bus stops, so traipsing around after a hard day shouldn't be an issue!! In fact, more than one I have stayed at have been within 50 yards of a bus stop. Ski buses are free, btw.
You really will be fine with one of the Snowhomes, especially at the price.
Enjoy your stay.
When are you thinking of going?

Cheers v much for the reply, thats really helpful.
Going for a week, departing anywhere between 20 and 28 feb. Just getting some info before i book over the next day or so.
Went to Pas de La Casa and Niederau last year, so kinda used to almost boarding straight into my bed off the piste :)
they are mighty cheap, and a few small walks is probably outweighed by the the huge ski area and hintertux snow, i guess.

I've stayed here a number of times, and used the snowhomes. They are basically privately owned B&Bs that allow the tour ops to place guests in them. You will probably never stop in the same one twice, but the ones I have used have all been good in terms of being warm and cosy, clean and tidy and offering the usual breakfast choice for Austria.
The rooms in Austria are generally bigger than anywhere else in the Alps so sparse is not a word I would have used.
Buses around the town are plentiful and easy to use, and as it happens you can walk from the Penken to the bottom end of town in ski boots in around 10 minutes so its never a big hike.
Never been to Pas, but I am sure you will find Mayrhofen a step up from Mayrhofen in terms of plenty to do off the slopes and the amount of skiing available compared to Niederau.

I've only done this type of accommodation once, it was Austria but not the big M. It was in Filzmoos and it was an English couple who ran it. Drove us to the lifts of a morning, provided Asprin for our hangovers and generally made it very comfortable. Heck, one mowing when I could not rouse my snowboarding buddy, the owner gave me a lift to the lift telling me at 9am that the village hadn't had such a chuckle at Kareoke in a long time and that the Irish always steal the show.
Pabs knows who I am talking about ;)
one thing to watch, we spent about 220 Euro for 7 nights B&B so thought we had a little extra for the little extras. Turned out to be one of the most expensive weeks I have done, but that's another story and not s reflection on this type of lodging. Go for it.
