The airports, instead of claiming on the travel insurance I just sacked it up and paid for the rental myself.. wasn't worth the hassle of a claim (wasn't going to bring my skis across the country quicker).
BA lost my luggage on the way back from said trip (wasn't returned for 2 weeks) and it got to the point of threatening legal action without some sort of compensation and they still weren't interested, so again just let it fly.
That was the first day of terminal5 mind you so they would have had thousands of complaints to deal with.

It was all a bit messy, as you can't claim from the airport, once you have left with the luggage. I mean, who unpacks their skis to check for damage, before heading for the car park. So in the end we claimed on our household contents policy, which included the necessary cover at that time. The skis were a total write off :(

I guess I'm just incredibly lucky

In my case I eventually got compensation from the airline but I was working for a tour operator who booked a lot of flights with Varig. Without that connection I think I could still be waiting - 15 years later :(

Ian, I have put boots in the suitcase and will do probably again. If my boots were in my ski bag then if it went missing I would lose it all which for a weeks holiday would be pretty shitty so best to split up the risk! Besides it is easy done with a 23kg suitcase allowance.
