Ramdomly I read that in one large town in England, they have banned Santa Claus as he is not multi-cultural/multi-religious enough. He is now known only as 'Christmas Man'!!!

Some say that the government consults him on travel logistics,
Others say he gives them rubbish advice because the country has no fun!
All we know, is he is called Christmas Man

Running slightly off thread my mums village declared that there would be no childrens christmas nativity play last year again because of the multi-cultural/multi-religious thing. She was so insensed she wrote to the house of commons (she does this quite a lot it makes her feel better). The reply on house of commons headed paper suggested that she was being slightly racist wanting a traditional english christmas activity.

Rose, I haven't a clue what the wine bit of this thread is about. But your mum, she has a lot to do with skiing. Bear with me.

Not the village school do-good nutters that condemn the children's nativity play. They don't know any better, they are to be pitied, and one day, they will figure life out for themselves.

You are either racist, or not. I confess that it wasn't until a week prior to the US elections, and then, only when it was repeatedly pointed out by political "observers", that I recognised that Obama was a black person. It genuinely hadn't occurred to me. So many people in the UK have different colour of skins, and we are so used to that being the case, why would one think that this is an issue.

I think that your mother has a good case for libel

Any red wine that's been reduced from £9.99 to £5.98 tends to posess an exceptional bouquet, and does have the uncanny knack of being extremely pleasing to the palette !

It was the saddest thing for me to endure hearing the the racist comments that were common the day after the election. Many average Americans are racist to the core. They go to church every Sunday, would do anything for a neighbour, but think nothing of telling a joke about stringing up Obama. Heck many of them think he is not a US citizen. Hopefully in a few years they will come to realise that greatness of a man or woman is not decided by the colour of their skin. Sorry to generalise, but I heard so many comments that I was very upset for a few days. Bottom line though is that he was elected and that says a lot for the majority of Americans.


Sorry for the rant. Here's my racist irony story that I tell people to show the stupidity of racism. As a kid I remember the first wave of Indian immigration to the UK in the early sixties. We were living in Hayes Middlesex and a neighbour had sold their house to an Indian family. Other neighbours were outraged. Even as a six year old, I can remember the most common comment was about the smell. There were all kinds of stories as to what the smell was, mostly to do with hygiene. I just love the fact that within a couple of decades, most British homes smelled like that as often as they cooked or ate indian food. Now that same smell makes people hungry, who doesn't like curry ? Don't judge a book by it's cover (or it's aroma)

As for Christmas, we havn't quite figured it out yet. How to have a holiday without disenfranchising some people. We all need to bend in the wind a little. This world has become so small in the last fifty years, we are bound to trip over each others toes until we can walk in harmony.

Christmas is an event celebrated the world over, but people lose sight of the fact that it is a christian celebration. What I do find concerning is that, living in a christian country, we bow down to the rantings of another religion which has imported itself and try not to upset them. First it was changing words in nursery rhymes, then not being allowed to fly the flag of St George on his own saints day, and now people are not being allowed to host a nativity play, for fear of upsetting someone?
But we allow people time off work to celebrate Eid (sp?), Ramadan, Diwali and other festivals from other religions that have been imported into the UK.
No racist undertones here, just a complaint about double standards and political correctness having gone way too far too long ago.

Now then, Andrew Peace for the best bottle of Rose for under a fiver, or what?
