Hi,
I've just booked to go to Niederau over the New Year period, and was wondering if anybody else on here will be there at this time. I'm really looking forward now, and am just hoping that there will be plenty of the white stuff!!

Still trying to organise a New Year week in Austria, and Niederau would be ideal, it's just that I will be there for two weeks in late January, and again in March. Maybe would like to ski elsewhere at New Year.
Am very interested in Saalbach/Hinterglemm, also.
Main issue is that the charter operators are not offering flights from Scotland at New Year. Either they are full, or the companies are holding on to them.
Can get easyjet to Munich, but sourcing suitable accomodation is an issue.
So, we may well be in Niederau at New Year.

I've realised that everyone on this site absolutely loves Niederau. Why? With less than 70km of piste and only 18runs I just don't get why anyone except beginners and families would go there. I also hear that the 'blacks'there are more like harsh blues. This is not a post meant to put down Niederau as I have never been there, more one to ask why it is so great for good skiers?

The following would apply to any resort anywhere:
*Good skiers are not out to bag mileage, that's what intermediates enjoy.
*Good skiers like resorts with lots of novice skiers as it leaves the steeper stuff blissfully empty, for days at a time.
*Good skiers like resorts where you don't need to fight for a decent line in the woods.
*Good skiers like resorts where the lift queue is not full of 7' tall telelmarking Scandi's at 8.30am (Unless you are one, and they are your mates)
Additionally, small resorts are usually very convenient, minimal bussing etc.
:D

Thanks for that. Have you been to Niederau though? As far as I can see there is very little steep stuff??
Good skiers also enjoy exploring and there doesn't seem to be much exploring to be had in Niederau??
Risoul has no queues, is not busy etc but has 180km of piste and excellent off piste. What makes Niederau so special? I would like to know (preferably from someone who has been there) as it clearly must have something that sets it apart for everyone to rave about it.

My God Juliet, do you realise what you have let yourself in for?
On the face of it, Niederau was a place I always dismissed as not suitable for a weeks skiing for me, but MANY people on here swear by the place. I am yet to be convinced, but prepare for an onslaught.....

If you are looking at the pistes, then you'll miss the good stuff
No, not been to Niederau, but "my" resort has less mileage, and I'm just starting to discover it's secrets. There is stuff that will remain way beyond me though.
