I hear that Austria is a good bet for early snow - I've only got a long weekend to play with (Dec 7-10)
Is it worth the punt or should I stay at home and go hiking in Scotland?
Cheers, Floydie

bit of a no-brainer that one Floydie :P Sack off Scotland and head off to Austria, it looks good at the moment although things do and can change very quickly. I'd still err on the side of caution and opt for a resort within striking distance of a glacier. Have a good trip
That's been widely reported and it's not really entirely true. There's been good amounts of snow in Austria and it's higher than usual there but not entirely unprecedented. Switzerland has received a fair amount of snow as well but it's highest in the areas nearer Austria, here in the Valais it's pretty good but not entirely without precedent.
Still it looks good, here's the view out of my front door this morning :
Ok, fair point... should have said Eastern Switzerland perhaps...
But it looks like there's more snow in the forecast for "ise and surrounding regions" next week... 8)
Verbier and Les Diablerets should be open this weekend - and I'd assume a fair few of the smaller resorts too; any of your local hills opening ise?
I shouldn't quibble over the difference between good and very good really :D
We should have opened last weekend but it was postponed to this weekend, I expect that'll go ahead now. It's weekend only until Dec' 8th but there's some racers up there now.

Forecast is to stay cold and keep snowing for the next 7 days at least.
I'd say the high resorts with glaciers should be fine in early December

take a look at the snow reports for kaprun/kitzeinhorn
and book your ryanair flights to salzburg train goes straight to zell am zee and then about 10 euros in taxi to kaprun,or buy your lift pass in zell and use ski bus ,plenty off b+bs,not sure if zellamzee would be open then.ryanair will probably have links for transfers about an hour by coach.

Floydie, Austria and Switzerland have just had one of the biggest November snows for many years and the forecast is for the weather to remain cold, and for the snow to spread South (possibly in lesser quantities than last week though).
So you should be good to go - reckon you'll have some good options by the first week of December.
Our Snow Forecast by Country pages give a pretty good idea of what's open and what's not, so keep an eye on :-
