you've probably already been..and hope you had a great time, but this may be of use to others reading the thread
on subject of your list of possible resorts...
les deux alpes... has good set of easier runs high up the mountain - so snow sure. runs down to the village are a bit trickier.
Arc2000.. not much night life..good skiing at this end of les arcs for all levels.
La Plagne.. probably better staying around the Plagne Bellecote / soleil end for lovely beginner pistes.
Tignes - also a good choice although you'd get the best from it after a couple of weeks skiing.
France is a bit pricey at the moment !! (eg at least E15 for a bolognaise - Val d'isere - Feb2010].
I've no experience of the other places.

one little tip - the distance to ski school is probably more important than to the nearest lift [this very much so if you ski with youngsters]

Hi

You could try the 4 Vallées in Switzerland, choose the cheaper areas to stay like Veysonnaz and Les Collons/Thyon there is great Swiss ski school, this end of the 4 Vallées in much cheaper to eat on the mountain hot chocolate 4chf (£2.50)Rosti 16chf
Wine again from 4chf per glass as the Swiss produce all their own which is very high quality. Fly into Geneva Easyjet and many others or Sion with snowjet (this has the shorted transfer in the alps from 20mins)
There are wide open sunny slopes in Les Collons ideal for beginners, nice places to stop for lunch or take a picnic. This is the more traditional end of the 4 Vallées.

I live here so please feel free to ask any questions, the only other thing I would say is to be organised make sure you have all your kit(excluding hire equipment), transfers, ski school, and as much information about the resort you choose before you go as it will make your holiday less stressful.

Have a great time

Best wishes

Wow... surprised to see this thread carried on going for a good while after I started it! Glad it ended up being of help to others too!

Unfortunately we didn't manage to get away anywhere at all in the end as I had an operation in January which laid me up for the best part of 3 months! So I've still never been near a pair of skis in my life and my girlfriend hasn't let up for a second about us getting something booked up for this year!!!

Which I can gladly say we've managed to do today! We've booked a week in Corvara, Italy for the week of 20th - 27th March staying at the Chalet Verena with Colletts. Heard it's a great place for complete beginnners like me with plenty of varied runs for an intermediate like her. Our main concern is what the conditions will be like as it's quite late in the season but Colletts have reassured us that the resort is well looked after, has plenty of snow machines if required and is usually good skiing available until the season ends. Hope they're right!

So my reading up on the beginner forums begins in earnest again!!
