Eggman,
Thanks for the photo, your foot looks awful, with that great gash sewn up. And it looks horribly sore. You poor thing! I shall show your photo to my kids to stop them wearing pointy shoes :D
I wouldn't be at all surprised if you cried when the nurse pulled off the bandage - I'm only surprised you didn't thump her one - I think I'd have done - it's the natural reaction to someone torturing you, even if they are a nurse!
I hope the operation was a success :D

I too have damaged my knee skiing in Engleberg 3 weeks ago, still waiting for the scan but knee is improving with the rice treatment.16 trips over a 14 year period usually having minor falls regularly, this year only fall once & bang damage done.
Having said that I hired skis that Bandit recommend & sure enough much superior to my 10 year old Fischer carvers, skied better than ever, no aching legs, more speed better posture total confidence in the skis themselves, but eventually at a price.
Wont put me off though, just have to be more careful from now on,I can now understand first hand the posts on here relating to ACL,MCL ect injuries maybe thats a bonus. :-)

i injured my knee indoors on snow slope, then completely wrecked my knee with an ACL on the mountain in Switzerland - I did 6 months physio, then the specialist decided I still needed surgery so had ACL reconstruction - I wear these braces when I ski - and apart from any physical support they provide, they do provide mental support and give me the confidence to "use" my knee. They are also pretty comfortable to wear all day.

OMG Kathy,
That sounds really terrifying! You're very brave to be off ski-ing again after all that. How long ago did it happen?

Ally - no not very brave! Maybe a little stupid instead?!
Original damage done in November 2007 in Milton Keynes indoor, then Christmas 2007 did the full damage in Switzerland. Had reconstruction in August 2008 and this is my first year back on the slopes - although I have visited both MK indoor slope and the new one at Hemel Hempsted several times to regain confidence since last summer. It was a bit scary the first time back on the same mountain in Champery I have to say, but after a week I got quite a lot of confidence back - and thoroughly enjoyed it - we are hoping to head back out there on 20th of this month for another week :)

Hello KathyD - glad you went back to Champery - when we were there at Christmas, one of the girls in my party also did her ACL and we ended up at Monthey hospital for the day. They sent her home in a full length strapping affair. When we go back, we found these knee braces: http://www.sorestore.co.uk/acatalog/knee-physio-support.html She went for the hinged one and although we're only three months down the line, she's now virtually pain free and hasn't needed surgery. We're all going back to Champery for Christmas 2010!

Gor blimey - this thread could put you off skiing ! Has anyone got any (informed) advice on prevention ?
I can offer some opinions (but not really backed up by medical fact)
- don't let your bindings be setup over-tight (in other words be very honest about your weight and ability)... I prefer to ski 0.5 DIN down from the suggested (is this wrong?)
- stretch properly before and after skiing and particularly after lunch.
- keep your legs warm (base layers)or stretch after that long cold chairlift
- retire early to the bar
