Thanks everyone for the responses. The shop I brought the boots from didn't take the liner out, so clearly they weren't as good at doing this as I had thought. Two of the ski instructors at XScape had recomended them which is why I went there but I've learned my lesson now...

I brought the boots this early on in my skiing career as I found the hire boots so painful, and thought that this would make a real difference as to whether I enjoy the holiday or not. I have quite wide feet (I think) and never go ice skating (for example) for exactly the same reason - I find the hire boots so painful.

Anyway it could be the case that I have had the boots too tight - on my first lesson the instructor told me they should be as tight as you can comfortably get them, so I'll try them again a bit looser, especially the bottom 2 straps.

I think I need to look into getting them re-adjusted - can anyone recomend a place in Yorkshire that is good at this sort of thing? I'm hoping that they can be adjusted and that I don't need to start again with a new pair!

Thanks again all of you for your responses - this place is great!!!!

Shamp00,
I'm glad you've decided what to do about your boot problem.

I think we've all learnt something. According to Bandit I'm supposed to be doing my boots up starting at the top, not the bottom, and according to Trencher I'm not supposed to be slackening them off to walk to the toilet.

Does anyone know how some people manage to walk downstairs with their boots facing forwards? I always have to turn mine sideways, and I hold everyone up.

I walk on my heels down stairs in a duck-like stance. Does't seem to be any slower than normal. Do not try on icy steps.

Best answer is not to walk in your boots at all, but its not always possible. Maybe that had something to do with my old boots becoming too big as I used them a number of times in Mayrhofen where there was plenty of walking to be done!!

Good advice all round here, those who didnt know to start fastening boots with the top 2 and then slipping the foot back into the heel position before doing the bottom 2....get into the habit of this!

Shamp00 - what boots did you actually buy?

Ally G - I don't think your method of doing up your boots its that much different from what CEM taught Bandit.

Often pain in the foot is a circulation issue and it is very common for people to undo their clips on lifts or at lunch.

Surprised no footbed was offered as giving the right support to your foot is essential - our foot arches are all different after all.

The skiing with clips undone is one of the oldest ski instructor tactics in the book and helps to ensure you get in the right position to work the ski.

I find myself, in this discussion, in a minority of, ermm, one. I wear rear entry boots, one clip, and the boots are rock solid. On the gondola, one clip to loosen.

Having said that, all but one of my long -term skiing mates use rear entry boots.

CEM would probably have me shot as an heritic.

You know it's really time to get you in an up to date boot, consistent with your skiing standard :D
