I'm sick of the "blue runs" in Austria...............where to go for some gentle stuff in France?

Thanks everyone who has replied so far - especially the latest tips for Les Arcs and Valmorel.

They are now in the mix with Belle Plagne, Montgenevre, Serre Chevalier and the little known but i like the look of Chamrousse.

Alpe D'huez is definitely worth considering and I'd concur that Les Arcs 1950 or 2000 would be a good option.

I can tell you where to avoid like the plague - Val D'isere. I think the people that created the piste map were colour blind!

hehe, a week in Val d'Isere was when my snowboarding really improved, mainly for this reason :D

Val Cenis would be perfect............ longest green in Europe comes most way down the mountain. Some easy blues & as a plus, cheapest place I,ve ever been to in France ( anywhere )

Hi Mel - Yet another resort to consider, and one from a skier of similar/less ability I think. I'm advancing well and after catching the bug in Niederau Austria (January 09) I wanted to go again and we had some good fortune that allowed us to do it. We didn't go back to Niederau mainly becuase the runs were limited to lots of reds and few blues. After some searching and reading we decided to go to Les Deux Alpes (27th March).

I loved it, the town was fairly boring and purpose built, but the views and area as a whole was fantastic. There are runs to suit all tastes. I didn't come all the way down the mountain, but could have. We were told that the run down (a green which was in fact a road/track) was boring. Becuase I'm so new I have had a problem with edges :) in fact In Austria I skied a Red twice but then lost my nerve by the end of the week.

In L2A I went far further and my skiing ability has improved massively. The runs on top of the mountain that are blue are steep in sections, but very wide mostly. Even the roads were fairly wide and despite the edges I managed fairly well. By the end of this trip I had come down a couple of Reds even with the instructor, but I too feel much more comfortable (on my own) on a blue/green. I recommend having a look at the resort anyway.

A week in St Anton, which has similar piste mismarking was great for building my confidence higher and throwing me down anything.

Hi Mel. I am looking to something very similar to you. It will be interesting to see where you end up booking. I had sort of narrowed it down to Belle Plagne but other resorts still in the mix are chamrousse and legoang (well I think Leogang havent done too much research into it, not realy sure if you can ski to saalbach from leogang and on what type of run). I am looking at any country really, up for any ideas. I watch with interest

Karen72 - i have gone for Chamrousse in the end. I gave up on Belle Plagne as the cost was just too much for us.

m0nk3y - i really liked the looked of L2A but am restricted to a preference for a short transfer time by my ski partner. You do sound like a similar standard skiier so i'd interested to hear where is next for you?!

To the more regular posters and experienced skiers - i guess my choice may seem a little disappointing but i had to severely compromise in the end on a combination of transfer time, cost and slopes. Personally i would have liked to have gone for Valmorel, Serre Chevalier or Montgenevre but hey ho the decision is made and i can't wait, just 8 and a half months to go :D
