it's not going to appeal to everyone, you've got to understand our way of life before coming or you could be a bit disappointed.

The lift system I used was certainly not awful. If you go to any resort at peak times expect to queue. I went first week of January 08 and never had a problem with queues and that was including getting over to Wengen to watch the Lauberhorn downhill racing.

I said waiting for trains which is still the main way to get around Grindelwald and Wengen of course unless you stick to a handful of runs at the top. It's like commuting and I'd work if I wanted to do that :D I've never skied First which actually looks quite good though.

ise, you have caught my attention re your comment about a visit not appealing to everyone and understanding the way of life, what does that mean, I'd be really interested in your comments. :D

Trains from Wengen up to Kleine Scheidegg run every 10 mins. We took the gondola most days though.
And I would find it difficult to have great views of a mountain once you are on it ..

Still think the scenery there is fantastic.

i'm having a few problems getting accommodation though - they don't really go in for the catered chalet job the big places in France do.

It's all self catered apt or hotels... :-( not ideal for ma wee pistepals.

anyone know any better?

you're correct, there's a variety of reasons for that, mostly it's really only a British thing so there's not a general European demand. Some places have allowed chalet operations, Verbier and Zermatt being the biggest two names.

The correct answer for those suggesting 'Grindelwald etc' is, of course, facing them when they do so.

It is Muerren....

And the good news for Queen_Sheba is that the best place to stay is run by a guy from Peebles and his Swiss wife, who offer outstanding hospitality. It's the Eiger guesthouse. Expect to pay CHF90 B&B double occupancy, or CHF70 single.

Adelboden is very chocolate boxey, a nice Alpine village, with all the shops a skier needs (supermarket, cheese shop, several ski shops and the ski hire shop right at the bottom of the gondola, fab cafes, little church, museum and an hour and a half walk to a wood carver if you cannot ski because of (a) bad visibility up top (b) injury (c) just fancy doing something else because you are having a pants day skiing! (and just occasionally there is such a thing!) Also VERY nice cake shops!!

www.adelboden.ch is the website. You can see webcams and also see the piste maps of the skiing areas - for a ski website it is good.

I am there mid Feb again. Fly into Berne, get the minibus to Berne Railway Station (having bought your ticket via Rail Europe) and then a stunning journey through to Frutigen, and then connecting bus to Adelboden, all with the usual Swiss efficiency (i.e. everything works and connects!)

3 weeks today! Yodelaayyyooooooo! :D :D :D
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!
