When you say a big issue - if you have a fear of heights then yes it could well be.
Best thing I can suggest is get there EARLY ie at opening time and get in a gondola with your own small group to yourself so you can be comfortable with people you know as that helps a lot. Also take a look outside, the views are amazing, and appreciate where you are.
As for booking up in advance, the advantage is its all out the way when you get there, but go online and compare prices through your tour op to those locally as the exchange rate can be a big factor.
What accommodation are you in, and what board? I might be able to help with suggestions on where to eat etc, depending on your requirements, group ages, etc.
Lots of reds and a few blues all over the mountain, they are not the longest runs, but they are all wide, so nothing should be too difficult to get down for an intermediate skier. Total novices should stick to ski school as it is regarded as a more technically challenging resort to ski.
The good open cruising runs are over at Rastkogel, where there are fast 6 and 8 man chairlifts. It tends to get more sun that side too.
If you like reds, head over to Eggalm as well, linked in to the Penken, and also spend some time skiing red 7 on the Horberg, its a great run.

I guess the best cable car I have been on is one that takes to up from Chiesa in Italy, a loverly ride, a great view, it takes you up a sheer cliff, but on the way down when it goes over the cliff lip it drops and your tummy comes up into your mouth ..... a great ride.

Thanks for all advice booked Mayerhofen 15th Jan as got a good deal hopefully this will be ok for kids(11 &13)3rd time skiing so looking for blues and red runs
Is the gondola up to ski area a big issue?also should we book passes, ski hire, tuition before or when we get there? any recommendations appreciated.

Isn't Kaprun part of Mayrhofen? I was told that there are some really nice blues on the Ahorn for beginners or those looking to gain confidence. Not sure if that's nearby though.
I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain
