Yep, I've been doing catered chalets the past couple of seasons as they offer better value. Have used them in Verbier, St Anton, Serre Che and ADH in recent trips, and probably wouldn't go back to a hotel or apartment again for a main week trip. That helps keep the price of the holiday down, but you still find some places where you have to buy lunch and drinks which can be expensive, which is where you need to consider your destination.
Again, I have found ADH and Serre Che cheaper as far as France goes.

My brother has a sensational deal in Serre Che in January. Club Med, all-in (flights, accommodation, half-board, ALL DRINKS, lift pass, instruction and kit hire for those who need it) - £760!

Don't think there's too much availability left at that price, though!

That is a reasonable deal. We paid £200 more than that, although that is for St Moritz, but Serre Che was coming in at around £900 when we booked.
The only thing is Serre Che does not have an altitude restaurant. Accommodation is not actually half board, its all inclusive at Club Med so so lunch is in, but you have to ski back down to the hotel at Serre Che to get it.
Its a good price though, considering what you get. I am liking the principle of Club Med, but will be able to offer a first hand point of view come the end of January.

Hey guys!
Ive only been to Les Deux Alps, La Plagne and Val Thorens, but I have to say of those 3 La Plagne was by far the cheapest in terms of food and accomodation, I think the lift passes were slightly cheaper too.
Hope this helps.
Chaz.

One worth checking out for the families is Chamrousse, not very well known by the brits - still very French, great snow conditions when we have been and so so cheap. Plus most deals include free lift passes, we are going with Crystal in Jan family of 4 in 6 man appartment inclusive of lift passes £1300 - thats inclusive of flights ,hire, ski school for the kids and transfers, we are also meeting some french friends out there that have managed to get an all in deal (self drive) for £300 for the week for the 4 of them.
