Hi Karen,
We did the same with SkiSet last year in Niederau, and yes the helmets couldn't be clicked on. Don't worry, I emailed prior to going and the hire shop said that you pay for them when you get there. This is exactly what happened and it was really easy and quite cheap, I believe it was 2 Euros a day if I remember correctly.
