i,ve been to mayrhofen once and chamonix 4 times.
mayrhofen is a lot smaller a town if your into your shopping( although there is enough even for my wife cause she dont ski)but skiing and boarding in mayrhofen is far superior to chamonix as a learner/intermediate in my veiw.
in chamonix you will probably have to use the buses to get to the slopes if your accomadation is within the town of chamonix.
our favourite ski slopes were on the le tours mountain, but that is a 20/30 minute cramped bus ride.
chamonix is not as expensive to wine and dine as critics make out.
even clothing in technique sports shop have cheaper clothing and gear than the uk.
if i was just starting out as a boarder/skier, i would definately go to mayrhofen.....stuff the expence.
hope this helps

she dont ski so she needs somewhere where they got a few shops,n,stuff while i,m out boarding.
i want to stay in europe, possibly drive to where ever as i usually do,she loved chamonix, but we,ve been there to many times now,we,ve been to mayrhofen, that was just big enough and a lovely place to,but she disliked la plagne cause there was no piggin malls up the mountain, even though that has got to be in my veiw the best so far.i am considering kitsbuhel.

if you are not bothered about money, silverfret, why go to Bulgaria?

If you are dripping money you really should be in Courchevel 1850. Non- skiers can put on ski clothes, full make up and jewelry, get the ESF guys to carry their skis that they don't actually use and join their Partners for lunch in restaurants that sell Diamonds too.

For lots of shopping and off the slopes entertainment, I suggest looking at:

Kitzbuhel: shopping, plus big pool complex

Megeve: Shopping, Casino

Courchevel: Shopping, rich Russian watching

St Moritz: Posh shopping, luxury hotels, horse racing on the iced over lake

Zermatt, Posh shopping, posh restaurants, sleigh rides, spa centres

Good Luck with your choice :D
