As a footnote to that, I looked at the min/max thermometer we have outside, in the last month the lowest recorded temperature has been -1.1' that's at 1600m in Zinal. Nothing alarming, it's just seasonal but it does show how warm the ground is. In fact, we were planting some trees yesterday.
The temperature's up and down right now, on Friday we needed a fire (just) but yesterday we could have easily have had a bbq outside. We did actually eat on the terrace of a local restaurant at lunch and it was 19'c and sunny.

As said before this year is an El Nina year which means lots of snow for europe as well as for those greedy powder addicts across the pond. areas of austria have apparantly already had 1M, although it probably wont last long as it is still quiet warm low down. Just to get you all a little excited pre-season check out the pics i recieved this morning from whistler the whole 1/2M dump fell in 1 night :)

We've had a very wet summer in the Alps as in the UK.
As oppose to last winter when it was mainly blue skies and sunny.
If we keep this level of precipitation for the winter it'll definatly be the best winter for a long time.
We did have some snow on the mountain tops last week

Sounds pretty positive based on comments so far! I'll be in Val D'Isere from 20th Jan, so I would assume that the chances of good snow conditions are good?

Well here in the Wildschönau Valley we saw a large number of aggressive wasps earlier in the summer and the local legend says that this heralds a great winter! Anyone else heard similar?

this news article sounds pretty positive. apparently, with the jet stream not acting as it usually does, heavy snow is more likely in the alps this winter.

I read some interesting articles on the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation)which refers to the weather patterns when the jet flow is either higher or lower than normal.
I prefer to see things with my own eyes and we have already had snow twice in the last week or so down to 1500 metres. Though the temperatures a still quite mild this may well be a good sign of things to come.
Undoubtedly when the season approaches I will be checking half a dozen weather sites daily in the hope that there will be the early season snow that we all want.

Well, last year the elders of the village were right about the snow, then this year they say that it will be a very cold winter, i'll try to know a bit more about the precipitations, because cold doesn't mean snow.
