Almost feel guilty. Keep mine in cave, standing upright throughout year, never seen anything but superficial rust i.e. assume edges today are stainless steel. Certainly never been concerned about damage to skis. If they can stand 8hrs in the snow then am sure they can cope with additional 1hr for evaporation and or gravity to take hold and remove water. Normally get them serviced night before 1st day of skiing and every 7-14 days thereafter depending on what have been doing on them.

I also don't do anything special with my skis over the summer, but it is very dry here. If you live somewhere damp it might be worth protecting the edges. The wipes Pavelski mentions also seem to be sold as gun wipes http://www.midwayusa.com/find?&newcategorydimensionid=4108 which are used to clean and prevent firearms corroding, should be easier to find than ice skate wipes. I don't think they will do any harm to the bases; UHMW PE is very tough http://www.uhmwpesheetrodtube.com/uhmwpesheetrodtubechemicalresistance.html
I wouldn't store them for any length of time with masking tape (even the blue UV resistant tape) on the edges as it might be difficult to remove, it becomes brittle with time. It is very useful for preventing rust during transit.
The most important thing is to keep the bases (and your ski boots) away from UV light as it makes the brittle.

Just to keep you,,up to date;
I placed a ski in rain for two days!
I then stored ski in garage for three days and rust began to form after two days!
I received from company 200 samples which I am now testing!
The first envelope which contains a dry wipe easily cleaned all base and ski edges!
Some rust spots had to be removed using a rough plastic pad very much like one used for pots and pans !
The second envelope had a pad with little oil. Do not unfold pad since you can use this pad at least 10-15 times! Carefully wipe steel edges at a 45 degree angle so that you cover side and base parts!
There does not seem to be ant damage to bases! I have taken an old ski and wiped all of base to see if there is damage! So far none !
I also asked a friend at university to do a more in-depth analysis on base to see if at microscopically level there is damage !
All seems fine !
As far as painters tape on edges, no problem to remove after two months on ski edges! The glue on tape does no cause high bond!
Happy Summer all !
