So Mrs H has managed to break a bone in her foot, the big toe to be precise, and not just break it but shatter it. This was2 weeks ago, with 8 weeks until our January trip. The consultant told her the bone should be ok to ski on in terms of safety, but will be painful. Mrs H is not convinced it will have healed by the time the trip comes around. Theres 8 of us going.
Heres the problem:
* does she pull out now and run the risk of being fit?
* does she wait until much nearer and if the hospital finally say shes unfit to travel, cancel and claim on the insurance?
* if she pulls out, should I as well, bearing in mind insurance only covers the injured person who cannot travel if a doctor says so?
* do I book an additional week later in the season if she has to pull out? (I am liking this option)
Bones can heal as slow or as fast as they like, theres no rule, especially with such a ridiculously crucial bone as the big toe, which lest we forget is vital to initiating a turn!!!!!
2 weeks ago I was thinking everything would be fine, and she'd be ok to travel, now I am not so sure.
Any advice?
:(

Oh dear, Tony, how unlucky for your poor wife :(
How much does it hurt her now? Can she walk on it? Has it improved in the last 2 weeks?
If you remember, I broke one of my big toes IN a ski boot, and carried on ski-ing for a couple of days afterwards, because I didn't know it was broken at the time. Mind you, mine wasn't shattered, it was a straightforward break.

Ouch... well, firstly, get well soon Mrs.H! 8)
Check with your insurer; this varies a lot. We had to cancel a holiday when my son tore an achilles tendon - bit of a downer when going cycling! The insurers were ace though and covered everything for the whole family without quibble.
They might not be so keen if you're going with a big (non-family) group but I'd have thought spouse of injured party would be covered at least.
Answers to the rest of your questions may depend on the above but I'd recommend booking another holiday anyway, just in case... and then you might end up with two.

I agree with Admin, check with your insurers as may / should be able to cancel the pair of you and claim (less excess).
The other 6 however will very unlikely be able to claim though....
If CAN claim, I'd go later in the season.
Ps not great though if you do have to cancel, but at least you should still get some piste in during the season.

Not ALL boarders sit in the middle of pistes.....

Tony,
my insurance policy says that I have to inform them if there is a change in my health. Have you told your insurers about your wife's toe?
When I broke my shoulder on the dry ski slope 10 years ago our insurers would have paid me back not just for my holiday but for my 2 kids as well, if I'd decided to cancel the holiday for the 3 of us.

We have been ina similar situation. My good lady broke her leg at the end of one October. She was in plaster for four weeks, and six weeks later we were due to go skiing. She would not entertain any discussion, we were to go.
As it happens, she skied, (really well, as ever, :( ), but she did suffer some pain. She just skied at her own speed, finished early, if needed, and it worked OK. Her philosophy was, "if I can't ski, I will sit on the balcony and read a book". Don't know what I saw in her, really.
Nowadays, she has a much more serious condition, and has to be far more careful than a broken leg.

I think unless you have an option of moving the trip later in the year, you should all go. Being in the mountains is great in any case. I spend quite a few weekends on crutches last season, it sucked not to be able to ski, but I would rather take a gondola every morning and sit on terrace with a book enjoying the scenery than stay in town during the ski season. Also made myself useful in the chalet, getting dinner ready etc., and going to apres ski with my friends knowing that we don't need to watch shops closing times.

I can't believe no one else has said 'Go without her'
It's the 1st comment you'd have made.
You know it's true.
