Meribel, over rated ??

Just wondered what peoples thought were here..

I ski the 3v 5-6 weeks per year, but find the lower altitude of meribel means it is the least best place to ski out of the rest of the resorts out there IMO....

Add to this the fact that it is way pricey to eat out and stay, does it deserve this high end status ???

This is by far the most attractive resort in the area, a real town with town hall, market square, baroque church, and attractive restaurants. Accommodation tends to be in chalets and appartments, all built to blend in with the local architecture. (If you're after Alpine charm avoid Val Thorens). It's at 1400m so there is plenty of snow. Lifts that get you up into some of the best and most uncrowded pistes in the area, but with 600km of runs for the more ambitious amongst you. Having spent a season in the 3 valleys, this is the place I would go back to if I went there for a holiday.
If you want alpine charm, forget Tignes-far too modern, and in January can get very cold and windy. My first ever ski trip was Les Deux Alps-and I would never go back. I've never been to Chamonix, but I agree with the advice that novices would find it less acceptable.

Agree that St Martin is a lovely place,

After Skiing the last 6-7 seasons in the three valleys, i found that St Martin can be a bit of a patchy and icy nighty to get back to in the early season, and very mushy towards the end, as it's lower altitude shows in the extremes of the weather.

If you're just going to use it as a base for access to the 3V then it's fine.

SimonH wrote:Hi,

I'm planning a ski trip over new year, somewhere in the French Alps. Out of a long list I've narrowed it down to the following 3...can anyone offer some advice on them and which you'd recommend?

1) Val Thorens
2) Arc 1800
3) Risoul

The group will be a large group of students, looking for a wide range of slopes suitable for all levels of ability, reliable snow and good apres-ski at reasonable prices. Note that we'll be taking a coach from London(!) so any advice on journey times/conditions would also be helpful!

Thanks in advance!

I know Val Thorens very well..

The level and range of skiing there is very good, and is very snow sure due to being the highest resort in the Alps.

Night life is pretty good, not sure of prices, but certainly not the top end like Corchevel and the like...
