Is it me or is there something a little strange with this thread? There seems to be a resistance from the OP to describe themselves, their background, experience etc.

I think you'd better come home now Ian, with your family, it's clearly not safe out there

Actually, I'm feeling a little sorry for the original poster. I think he/she was genuinely trying to be helpful - and at least he/she doesn't wibble on about what they eat for breakfast etc. like I do.

Although I must say I wouldn't fancy having to ski wearing a gum shield - that would be going a bit too far for me

You all missed the most important tip for avoiding injury whilst on the slopes.

Dont snowboard ski instaed. :)

I await the backlash from our boarding friends.

Backlash - You almost never see a snowboarder with a brace on their knee, I've seen dozens of skiers wearing them. If it were not for terrain parks, and half pipes skewing the figures, I really do believe snowboarding would have significantly less serious injuries than skiing. On the other hand, skiing is preferred by less fit, and more timid people who are more likely to injure themselves falling.

Hook, line and sinker

Trencher, if snowboarding attracts fitter people, why are they always sat on their backsides, just over the brow of every hill )

Also, why do I never see adult skiers dragging their skis along the ground behind them, apparently too tired to pick them up? :D
