Watch you don't get flattened by the rush to get on the ski bus  - we nearly were when we were going back to Zell am See from Kaprun a few years ago. I guess the thing to do would be to avoid rush hour.

We're hiring a car, so I'm hoping we can chuck all the gear in that and make our own way over.

That sounds a much better idea than going on the bus. I was actually afraid that my daughter was going to be squashed flat by the rush of people plus skis and sticks etc.

I much preferred the ski-ing at Zell am See to Kaprun when we went, but at the time I only had about one week's ski-ing experience. The glacial bowl above Kaprun is very bare and 'white' whereas Zell am See has trees and the view of the lake and easy runs in lots of different directions. The only bad thing I have to say about Zell is that when we were there we had to cross a main road in the morning carrying our skis, with very heavy traffic to get to the main gondola, and on their website I see they have something about a new tunnel for the road, although I don't know exactly which bit of road they've managed to bypass.

Have fun!

Hopefully we'll be able to use the car, and avoid this bus, and the crush :(

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully we'll be lucky with the snow and have a great week :D

If the snow is poor in Zell and the neighbouring resorts, I think the crush at Kaprun will be even worse  We only visited Kaprun for one day, and went all the way up (past the midway station) to the top. I have a feeling that gondola is the only way up (I'm sure someone will correct me here). If so, it is likely to get crowded, especially if as I said the snow is poor elsewhere because people bus in from all the surrounding resorts, so I'd advise getting up early.

I'm quite sure there will be plenty of snow up on the glacier :D. As I understand it, the problem with the glacier isn't about the reliability of the snow, but that when it's very windy they shut the lifts, and even if they haven't shut all the lifts it's absolutely freezing up there because there's no shelter at the top. We checked the weather forecast before we left Zell and went there on a lovely sunny day with no wind, so conditions were fine.
