Not all brands of chemical hand warmers are the same. So you might try a different brand with more success. I've used them directly inside my gloves on really cold days (-30). That way it's easy to give them a shake, for a little more heat.

It is because I was standing in 'race' boots all day often at 30 degrees below

I have a similar problem. My OH calls me the walking corpse. My patients say it must mean I have a warm heart. ) I use hand warmers in my gloves when I ski, (bought a large box in Costco a few years ago) and they work a treat.

we absolutely swear by this type. give them a good shake for a couple of minutes as you kit up, they'll cool down a bit as the day goes on but, as Trencher says, shake your hands like a loony  or I tend to bang them together. She really will need to put them between the gloves (preferably mitts) and inners gloves because if they're next to her skin they'll burn her, they're that good.

I used to use the Mycoal ones, in boots and gloves. Now I have warmer gloves, and there is insufficient room in my boots )

For me, the big breakthrough was starting to take a Garlic tablet each day. Fingertips go all warm and tingly :D
These days, the tablets don't pong, so there is no need to smell of Garlic )
