Depends where you're going if a transfer ticket is cheaper. However, whoever told you that was talking total rubbish. Two singles will never be cheaper than a return ticket so it's a question of if you can travel cheaper on a regular ticket compared to transfer ticket. Easy to check, just check the price on the SBB site I linked to above. This isn't the Channel Tunnel or the Virgin Rail, it's a the Swiss public transport system, it's efficient and doesn't engage in predatory pricing.

You might find an exception but generally the transfer ticket will be cheaper. For Zermatt a standard return is 178.- chf or 80 quid.

Am I reading it right? Does it say that the transfer is free!!?

Just re-read it. Perhaps its' if you buy one then another person goes free.

badly written

It's basically 52 quid a ticket and that's a round trip from the point of entry to the resort. A better writeup here http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/produkttexte.php?passid=3

Bandit would know more, obviously we don't use them we've half price and GA's anyway. It's especially good for Zermatt as it's train all the way. Timetables at http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

I heard my name mentioned :D The Swiss Transfer Ticket is very good value for many transfers to ski resorts. Always check the price against sbb.ch to make sure. I travelled to Zermatt on the train from Geneva in September, it's a door to door rail service with the train station inside the airport.

I purchased my ticket from these folks, and everything worked fine.Currently it's £51 for a return ticket to and from your resort.

It's vital to purchase a Swiss Transfer Ticket before you leave for Switzerland. Once you are on the train, you need to have completed the ticket start date and inserted your passport number, and be ready to have your details checked by the train staff.
The ticket also covers most of the Postbus service routes, if that forms part of your route.

ellistine when it says free round trip, I do believe that it means that you can choose the route you travel by, but you must complete the journey in one day :D

ise I had no idea that you had a railway hobby, congratulations on your coming out :D

BTW The special scienic trains were charging a supplement when I last travelled. I expect it's to help pay for the perspex in the roof :-)

Damned natives

I have just priced up a transfer to Zinal on sbb.ch, vs the Swiss Transfer Ticket. Last winter it was cheaper to buy a rail ticket at Geneva. As the exchange rate for sterling has changed, it was quite a bit cheaper today to buy a Swiss Transfer Ticket.
