I went to St A Saturday for a day. I basically hated it. It was booked solid, overcrowded, and the piste traffic dangerous. The blacks I tried were pretty normal and in OK condition, the long red I skied (top to bottom of Rendl) was difficult, but the blue down from Grampel lift was seriously challenging by any standards (both I and the very experienced Austrian I was with found that blue significantly tougher than the blacks, a point perhaps deserving its own thread).

I think I also mentioned something similar in a previous post , I guess j2skiers love crowded over and under graded pistes . Still each to their own 8)

Although this point is not new, I remind myself because in my seventh year skiing I still have a safety-blanket mentality towards blue and a frisson of fear at black (whereas my Austrian friend chooses pistes and off-piste routes by look and feel of the gradient and snow condition, and even forgets which level each colour is). The fact the nice black short cuts on the horrible and overcrowded blue piste in question were deserted, suggests I am not alone in this irrational reaction.

Dachstein West in the Austrian Salzkammergut - it has an amazing new Snow Park this year, and wifi at all the lifts. Lots of fun and new tricks to try here, then send your photos home from the slopes!

I don't understand this fixation people have with the colour of a piste on the map.
