Hello!

My boyfriend and I have been skiing only once, and learned on shorter than normal HEAD skis (orange) - we were told that these were easy to learn with as it's easier to turn...Does anyone have any idea what I should ask for when we ski this year? I'd really like to get the same model of skis again!

Thanks!

Talk to the ski hire shop and they should be able to advise. :D

I like shorter skis. I am 5 foot 7 and ski on 157 skis.
Each year, there "fashion" changes for ski length. A few years ago they would measure up to your chin, then your eyes, then the top of your head. Some of the skis I saw in Verbier measured to the top of your head on a ladder. I think its personal preference, and what you feel comfortable. Generally speaking, longer skis dont turn as sharply, but run quicker. If you want to develop technique and improve, I would probably suggest the slightly shorter skis. Stand them on their tails and the tips should come to round about your mouth - at least thats what works for me.
Everyones different though.

I read recently while looking for new gear that the length of ski to choose depends not so much on your height, but more on your weight. Can someone advise a bit further?

Thanks!

Different strokes for different folks. My own skis measure 158, 163 and 172. I'm 164 (5'4) tall and 65 kg. My shortest pair have the biggest turn radius at 17.1 metres, but will still make these shorter turns!

Your body weight will play a part in your ski choice.

Shorter skis are not necessarily easier to turn OR easier to learn on.. all about the preference and what conditions you are using them in as Bandit said. My shortest skis are 162's and now my longest-189's 8)

Ask for 150-160 sized skis. I learned on shorter skis and have yet to try anything bigger than 160.

For a beginner, shorter skis should be easier to turn than longer skis as you can get away with not using poles with 150s

After learning the basics on skis I moved down to 105 skiboards. These are a lot of fun going over kickers, riding fake and crusing down runs because you can take a taller stance.
I find it a breeze to carve with them as well since it is easy to get on edge. They are also fast and give good float in powder because they are wide.

What skiboards do you have (105 in length? or width?)? What brand are they?

Cheers,
