Ian, you're right, I no longer think your post was daft; I think it's downright bloody stupid! (only jesting!!!!)
My helmet was on my swede long before Natasha Richardson's untimely demise, by the way, so no relevance whatsoever to me and many others!!!

Is it not true that some motorcyclists can use a turban instead of a crash helmet, if so what protection do you get from that, & could we find them appearing on the slopes.
EmmaEvs, Brilliant & all sounds so much more fashionable than a lid,
even Tony might go for it if you can wrap an arsenal shirt round it.
Mmmmm we could even carry around sets of crayons so that if we get bored of the current design (or god forbid find ourselves in a venue where someone else has the same one), we can just find a substitute, scribble away, wrap it on and off we go.

For the record, I have no issue with people who wear lids, especially those who have been sporting them for a few years, but its the bandwaggoners who tell you you're an idiot for not wearing them I have a problem with.

I started wearing a helmet about twelve years ago, after sliding on my back through some trees. It was obvious that had I hit a tree, a helmet might have made a big difference to the outcome. At the time, there was no real promotion of helmet wearing, but as I wear helmets for all my other sports, It seemed pretty reasonable to wear one for the sport where I was most likely to hit my head hard.
The comparison I would make is with cycling. If you sedately ride your sit up and beg around the block on a Sunday afternoon, the risk to your noggin is very small. If you like to pull wheelies, hop curbs, and catch air of any ramp in your way, or go very fast, a helmet is a very sensible precaution.

Brooksy I think you've got it. I'm coming around to the idea that a head impact is far less likely to end in tears if it's surrounded in soft material. I don't know what i was thinking. Cheap, light, and easily replaced if mislaid, with a hotel hand towel, pair of pants or even a coffee shop napkin. Perfect.
I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain
