Thanks everyone for your comments on how to walk downstairs in ski boots.
Maybe it would be worth buying an old pair of ski boots just so I can practise this at home )
I will try the duck stance on my heels.
And for anyone that doesn't know this - from my point of view it doesn't really matter how many pairs of ski boots I wreck by doing them up wrong/undoing them too often etc. because I hire a different pair of boots each time :-)
But I might have a go at doing them up Bandit's style, and see how I get on. And if I get a chance this next holiday, I'm going to try ski-ing with all the buckles undone, to see how I get on.

It's no wonder that hire boots don't ever really fit anyone, because each hirer does not care about wrecking the inners.
  Sorry Ally, missed that, however you do raise a valid point. You may be careful, others may not care a jot. It's easy for a hire shop to charge a customer for visible damage to skis, but much less obvious if their boots have walked the length of the resort each day, fully undone.
Promise me you will never buy 2nd hand ex-hire boots, or even 2nd hand boots. It's too much of a financial gamble.
Had never heard of someone having a carbon fibre implant to repair tendons, cool! This shed some light for me http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/reprint/62-B/4/497.pdf
Just get them properly fitted and you will have no issues 8)

Walking downstairs backwards works too, although its obviously much more difficult to see where you are going!

Bandit,
It was actually meant to be a joke (wrong smiley perhaps?).
I'm sure I'm much more careful with my hired boots and skis than the average user. But in any case, the places we hire our stuff from seem to buy all new every year. It is, though, perhaps a warning against buying second hand ex hire boots (should anyone ever consider doing this).

People don't really think and do silly things, I lend out a couple of pairs of skis to family and I stood there one day and watched them with the base of the other ski undo the other binding, I spend time and my money in prepping these skis for these guys to use and it does become frustrating when equipment is misused, I did let them know what I thought

Speaking as someone who has bad feet, bunnions, carbon fibre tendons in one ankle, I bought my boots second hand when in Saas Fee at least 4 years ago because they were comfortable. I never unclip until its time to take the boots off I don't need to my boots are very comfortable. I have a pair of "Super Feet" inners to help with my flat feet. Problems will start next year when I get my feet sorted and treat myself to some new boots.
