Well I've certainly learned from this experience to do your research first next time!
I bought the boots on the 5th October, and I have only worn them 3 times for an hour each time (for 3 lessons). I'd rather not get a replacement pair from them but buy a new pair from someone who knows how to fit them properly.
If they don't offer me a full refund (and I don't expect they will), I'll send them a letter threatening the small claims court - after all I made it quite clear to them that I was a novice and was relying on their advice and they sold me something which was inappropriate. Under the sale of goods act, they need to be fit for purpose, and these clearly are not. I have sued a company once before (over a kitchen in which they supplied different appliances from that which I ordered) and it was surprisingly easy and successful.
The boots are Head Edge+ 10.2. I have no idea what size they are as they don't say on them (actually I think they say they are size 25, but not sure what this means!) My shoe size is 5.
There are a couple of shops near me that look promising, and I have made an appointment with one for Friday - their website says to allow 2 hours for the fitting, and when I spoke to the guy on the phone today he seemed to know what he was talking about. At least this time I'll not walk out with a pair of boots unless I'm confident they know what they're doing!
Sorry Tony, but it seems that I might not need your kind and excellent value-for-money offer of lift lessons after all!
:-)

25.0 is the mondo point size. Actually this is just centimeters, nothing fancy. I think you may end up in a 23.0 shell, two sizes smaller.

Matt would never have to worry about boot out on a snowboard. Also a good size for boots on sale at the end of the season.

You're right that 5 is quite a small foot size - but then I'm only 5ft tall so I'm in proportion. And as my mum always told me, size isn't everything :-)
Anyway I have been back to the shop, and they were somewhat on the defensive at first, telling me that the shell test is an out of date test, because the liners in the boots are different thicknesses. They did agree to swap them for me, and I have come out with some Rossignol Radical Sensor3 90 boots, which in the shop they said were 23.5 size, and they did seem to fit fine. On getting home and looking at them, I see they are actually 24.5s...
So I'm off to the other place with them tomorrow, and if they tell me they're too big, I'll sell these on the internet (at least I can honestly say they're brand new and have never been skiid in!) and start again with another company.
Many thanks again to all who have helped me with this!!!!

Interesting swap. I dont know what you paid for the Head boots originally but those Rossi's are dirt cheap. You get get them for about £90 online. I dont know much about the spec of them I am afraid, but if they were comfy and fitted you properly and you got your moneys worth, all well and good. 24.5 is about right for a 5 I would have thought.

Normally for each shell size, there are two thicknesses of liner. A thicker liner for the whole mondo point, and a thinner liner for the .5 size. The thicker liner tends to pack in almost to the point where there can be little difference between the two. It will feel more snug initially, and does seem to provide a firmer fit when packed in. That's why I always go for the whole mondo point size, even though it seems too tight at first. I don't know of any manufacturer making shells based on the half size. Burton used to for hard snowboard boots, and it confused a lot of people.
The shell test is the only way to gauge fit. The liner will pack in to the extent that the shell will allow, so no matter how good a boot feels at first, if the shell is too big, you end up with a loose fit.
